Tourists Enchanted by Costa del Sol’s Natural Attractions

The Costa del Sol’s coastal strip is renowned as one of the most popular tourist and residential-tourist destinations in the world. From Torremolinos as a pioneering holiday resort in the 1960s to Marbella as a modern capital of glamour, the Coast has firmly established itself as a favourite for those seeking a haven for beach, leisure, golf and other sports. In recent years, however, the lure of Málaga’s charming inland villages, mountain ranges and bucolic landscapes has been attracting an increasing number of visitors – and eventual expatriate residents. According to Elías Bendodo, president of the Turismo Costa del Sol promotional board, 1,101,000 tourists will have visited Málaga province’s inland areas by the end of the year, 8.6 per cent more than in 2016. They are, he says, attracted by a combination of nature, ornithology, culture, gastronomy and hiking. In relation to the latter, the Diputación de Málaga (provincial government, also presided over by Bendodo) has launched a campaign, “Descubre tu grandeza” (rather oddly translated as “Discover Your Greatness”), to further promote the Costa del Sol’s “La Gran Senda” (“The Great Path”). The Diputación reports that 1.5 million hikers a year have been enjoying the Senda since its launch in 2014, consolidating its appeal as one of Málaga province’s most popular tourist attractions. The Senda comprises more than 656 kilometres of tracks – for both bicycle riders and hikers – in a circular route through 51 municipalities. Back on the coast, the good news of 2017 continues, with property developers and other investors further demonstrating their renewed love affair with the Costa del Sol. At the start of the week, Urbania International announced plans to invest €250 million in a luxury residential project on the eastern outskirts of Fuengirola. Then the Avantum Group hosted a lavish fiesta to present “a new concept of luxury in Marbella”, the Touch Puerto Banús boutique hotel. Due to be officially inaugurated on 27 December, the establishment is incorporated into the Casa Club premises, a sprawling former luxury villa in the Cortijo Blanco area transformed into a social club two years ago. Avantum chairman Martin Nielsen explained that, rather than just a hotel brand, the project would be a “personalised accommodation” concept with, for example, a “host” for each guest rather than a receptionist – and prices ranging from €140 (low season) to €1,500 (high season). In other news this past week, Marbella Town Hall announced its approval for phase one of the iconic Don Miguel hotel’s reconstruction into a Magna Hotels and Resorts establishment managed by Club Med, and reported that licences had been granted for three other boutique hotels in the city centre. These positive developments in the hotel industry are invariably reflected in the real estate market, as many visitors whose first contact with the Costa del Sol is as a hotel guest become so impressed with the area’s appeal and infrastructure that they decide to buy a holiday home or even move to the Coast permanently. For those currently in that position, not far from the Higuerón urbanisation is our featured home of the week, a newly-built contemporary villa in an exclusive residential estate overlooking the Mediterranean, and excellently priced at €1.5 million.
