The Name’s Spectre… Aston Martin Spectre

[caption id="attachment_2373" align="alignright" width="300"] The new Aston Martin DB10[/caption] One of the movie world’s closest guarded secrets has now been revealed. In a special live mainstream event at Pinewood Studios in London, director Sam Mendes announced that the 24th James “007” Bond film would be called “SPECTRE”, introduced returning actors Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris and Rory Kinnear, welcomed new cast members Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci (pictured), David Bautista and Andrew Scott – and unveiled a new Aston Martin designed specially for the movie, the DB10. Due for release on 6 November next year, the plot involves a cryptic message from Bond’s past that sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. “While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.” [caption id="attachment_2383" align="alignright" width="150"] Sean Connery during a break from shooting "Goldfinger"[/caption] “SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) is a fictional global terrorist organisation that featured in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. Locations for SPECTRE include Pinewood London, Mexico City, Rome, and Tangier and Erfoud (Morocco); while Bond also returns to the snow, in Sölden, Obertilliach and Lake Altaussee (Austria). Some truly stunning settings to see the sleek new Aston Martin in action… for motoring enthusiasts always one of the most attractive features of a Bond big screen extravaganza. In fact, for many fans it’s hard to imagine James Bond behind the wheel of anything but an Aston Martin! [caption id="attachment_2387" align="alignleft" width="150"] Pierce Brosnan and the DB5[/caption] Described as “giving a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins” (production will be limited to 10 of the bespoke sports cars), the DB10 celebrates the famous British sports car marquee’s half century association with Bond, which started with the iconic DB5. This “enduring romance” began with “Goldfinger,” the author’s seventh James Bond novel (1959). Fleming wrote that his debonair, hard-as-nails British spy drove an Aston Martin DB3 while motoring through Europe on the hunt for notorious villain Auric Goldfinger. Fleming explained that Bond’s car had only a few subtle modifications to assist his work as a MI6 spy: the bumpers were reinforced and a secret compartment allowed him to hide a Colt 45 pistol. [caption id="attachment_2389" align="alignright" width="150"] Daniel Craig in “Skyfall”[/caption] Five years later, the 1964 film version of “Goldfinger” starring Sean Connery sealed this relationship between James Bond and Aston Martin. When Bond producers Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman imported Bond’s car from Fleming’s book for the film, they upgraded him to the then latest model, the DB5. While Bond was being shown his gadgets and vehicle at the start of “Goldfinger”, he asked Desmond Llewelyn’s Q, “Where’s my Bentley?” “Oh, it’s had its day, I’m afraid,” replied Q. The DB5 has been at the heart of this pairing ever since. In 1995, with Pierce Brosnan taking over as Bond in GoldenEye, Agent 007 raced the DB5 against a Ferrari in the film’s opening scene – of course winning! And when the producers of the Bond films, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, were celebrating the series’ 50th anniversary in 2012 with “Skyfall” the DB5 made a re-appearance, Daniel Craig’s Bond driving it to Scotland for the film’s explosive climax.
