Star-Studded Cuisine on the Costa del Sol

Expectations were on edge this week as restaurateurs throughout Spain waited for Michelin’s annual announcement of its star establishments. For the Costa del Sol, at least, the wait was worth the anxiety, as all the current Michelin-star restaurants maintained their ratings; and they were joined by a new member of the elite club. Actually a former member, because Bardal in Ronda (not really the Costa but still in Málaga province) is located in the old premises of Tragabuches, which used to have a star when Dani García and Sergio López were running the restaurant. García, of course, subsequently returned to his home town Marbella where his first restaurant Calma gained one then two Michelin stars, and – on moving operations to Puente Romano Resort – his eponymous restaurant continued with two stars. During the gala presentation this week in Tenerife, Michelin also confirmed the current single-star status of Málaga province’s José Carlos García Restaurante, El Lago, Skina, Messina, Sollo and Kabuki Raw. Three Málaga restaurants were added to Michelin’s second-tier category, Bib Gourmand (good cuisine for less than €35): Aderezzo (Skina’s second brand in Marbella), El Palangre (Estepona) and Platero & Co (Gaucín), joining the existing BiBo Marbella (run by Dani García in Puente Romano) and Figón de Juan (Málaga city). Further afield, but not too far for Costa del Sol residents keen to savour cuisine in other parts of Andalucía, “Chef of the Sea” Ángel León gained a third star for his Aponiente restaurant in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz), the only establishment in the region at the pinnacle of Michelin’s rankings. León’s Alevante restaurant in Novo Sancti Petri also gained its first star. Other one-star establishments in Andalucía are Noor and Choco (Córdoba), La Costa (El Ejido, Almería), Alejandro (Roquetas de Mar, Almería), Acánthum (Huelva) and Abantal (Sevilla). A total of 11 restaurants in Spain now have three stars, including a second new addition for 2018: ABaC (Barcelona) run by chef and Masterchef TV judge Jordi Cruz. The others are Akelarre and Arzak (San Sebastián), Azurmendi (Vizcaya), DiverXO (Madrid), El Celler de Can Roca (Girona), Lasarte and Sant Pau (Barcelona), Martín Berasategui (Guipúzcoa) and Quique Dacosta (Denia, Alicante). For those not already settled on the Costa del Sol, this late-autumn period is an excellent time to visit and enjoy the Coast’s stellar cuisine – which extends far (and appetisingly) beyond the exclusive Michelin-recognised establishments. As Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing director of leading Spanish house-builder Taylor Wimpey, notes, “While autumn in the U.K. conjures up images of grey clouds and drizzly rain, autumn days in Málaga… are still exotically warm with temperatures often no less than 20 degrees centigrade, making it the finest time to visit for a final blast of sunshine not too far from home. “Málaga's reputation lies above all on its cultural identity and autumn brings a large number of fairs and festivals to the province. Beyond the summer months, the city offers many traditional food festivals with autumn bringing chestnuts, grapes and 'aguardente' (brandy) to the table.” Of course, adds Marc, “Experiencing Málaga doesn't have to happen just once a year: it's the perfect location to own a holiday home. Being both a winter and summer sun destination, the region is topping the list for property investment.” A sentiment with which we heartily agree… Luxury Living Our stunning featured home this week is located on Marbella’s famous Golden Mile, not far from the Dani García two-star Michelin restaurant – and great “Black Friday” value at €1,895,000.
