Showpiece Homes, Luxury Living… and Star Cuisine

The Costa del Sol’s renown as a focal point of gourmet excellence has been reinforced following the presentation of the 2016 Michelin Guide for Spain and Portugal. As was expected, the Coast’s four Michelin-star restaurants all maintained their categories. Dani García’s eponymous establishment in Puente Romano remains the flagship of culinary chic in Marbella, with its two stars, while El Lago restaurant at Greenlife Golf (at the eastern end of Marbella municipality) kept its star for an 11th consecutive year, and the José Carlos García eatery in Málaga city’s Muelle Uno port area and Skina in Marbella’s old town also maintained their coveted stars. That was obviously excellent news for them but the biggest smiles were on the faces of the representatives of three other leading Costa del Sol restaurants. One of the happiest chefs in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), where this year’s presentation gala was held (in 2014 it was in Marbella at the Los Monteros Hotel), was Mauricio Giovanini, whose Messina restaurant in Marbella has been touted as a potential Michelin star recipient for several years. Finally, the Argentinean’s dreams were realised, with Michelin praising Messina’s modern Mediterranean cuisine and its “excellent textures and noticeable flavours”. Arguably the second happiest Costa chef (albeit by adoption, as he was born in Brazil) in the Galician capital was Diego Gallegos, popularly known as the “Caviar Chef” for his innovative work in the kitchen with sturgeon fish. The guide lauded his “amazing and delicate creations” at Sollo, located in the Reserva del Higueron resort (between Fuengirola and Benalmádena). Named 2015 “chef revelation” at this year’s Madrid Fusión gourmet fair, Gallegos was expected to secure a Michelin star at some stage of his career (if not so soon) but the third new Costa restaurant honoured in Galicia was something of a surprise, even for industry insiders. [caption id="attachment_4027" align="alignleft" width="150"] Kabuki Raw Restaurant[/caption] [caption id="attachment_4025" align="alignleft" width="150"] Kabuki Raw Fusion Cuisine[/caption] Kabuki Raw is the signature restaurant at the Finca Cortesín luxury hotel resort in Casares municipality and – as part of an international group of five restaurants with three Michelin stars – it certainly has the right pedigree. Overseen by head chef Luis Olarra, Kabuki’s cuisine is a fusion of Japanese and Mediterranean ingredients. The 2016 guide features a total of 1,900 restaurants, highlighted by eight establishments, all Spanish, that maintain their three-star status: Arzak (San Sebastián – Guipúzcoa), Azurmendi (Larrabetzu – Vizcaya), DiverXO (Madrid), El Celler de Can Roca (Girona), Martín Berasategui (Lasarte – Guipúzcoa), Quique Dacosta (Dénia – Alicante) and Sant Pau (Sant Pol de Mar – Barcelona). A total of 23 restaurants have been distinguished with two stars (20 in Spain and three in Portugal), including two new additions: Coque (Humanes – Madrid) and Zaranda (Es Capdellà – Mallorca). Together with Dani García, Aponiente in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz province) is the only other establishment in Andalucía with two stars. In addition to Messina, Sollo and Kabuki Raw, Acanthum in Huelva was the only other restaurant in Andalucía to gain a star. In total, there were 15 new additions to this category, taking the total to 157 (146 of them in Spain). For our featured property this week, we figured we had to stay on the Golden Mile, close to Dani García’s haute cuisine restaurant and Bibo bistro, as well as a sumptuous array of other excellent eateries nearby. This apartment (excellently priced at just €950,000) is located in the prestigious Persian Garden development, in the midst of a tropical garden landscape adjacent to the five-star Puente Romano hotel.
