Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… San Pedro
A decade or so ago, when discussion drifted on to the thorny issue of the bottleneck through San Pedro de Alcántara, locals would bemoan the fact you could drive all the way from Barcelona without coming across a traffic light… until San Pedro de Alcántara.
Residents’ rigorous clamour for a solution eventually culminated in plans for a tunnel through the town but the project remained on the drawing board as Spanish authorities wrestled with the country’s economic crisis. Then, finally, the giant drills began burrowing their way under San Pedro’s main thoroughfare and in 2012 the long-awaited project was completed.
But that was just the start. This was not to be just a normal garden-variety tunnel but part of a more ambitious transformation of San Pedro, from a one-time agricultural colony and neighbouring Marbella city’s less-privileged little sister to a chic resort town in its own right.
Last December, the state-of-the-art San Pedro boulevard park – developed on top of the tunnel as it traverses underneath the town from east to west and diverts traffic from the centre – was inaugurated to great fanfare.
Designed to link the town centre to its attractive beach area, and create a relaxing, verdant hub of leisure amenities for both residents and tourists, completion of the park has coincided with the resurgence of San Pedro as a cosmopolitan showcase of the Costa del Sol’s diverse contemporary charms.
Just as importantly, for the area’s economy, it has had a positive effect on the property market. San Pedro de Alcántara is cool again, new residents are converging on the town, numerous commercial and culinary establishments are opening (or re-opening with a reinvigorated flourish)… and there are some great real estate deals for buyers.
Like this exquisite mansion overlooking the Mediterranean in a frontline beach setting. Highlighted by its exceptional finishes, and laid out over three levels comprising 1,548 square metres of built area (on a 2,335 square metre plot), the property is entered through a sprawling front porch that leads to a majestic hall with sweeping staircases and Versace-designed hand-rails, positioned under a domed ceiling finished with intricate hand-carved detailing and a spectacular chandelier.
In addition to a main reception room opening out onto terraces and gardens with superb sea views, a catering-standard kitchen and upper-level bedroom suites with their own jacuzzis, the villa has a two-bedroom guest apartment, three-bedroom staff quarters, garage for four cars, a swimming pool heated with an electric pool cover, a sauna and even a full discotheque. Plus… direct access to the beach from the garden area.

In the meantime, Aston Martin Works is celebrating its diamond jubilee in 2015, and what better supercar could there be to enjoy a road trip from Barcelona – now uninterrupted by traffic lights until Algeciras! – than one of six limited editions cars commissioned to mark the company’s 60 years at Newport Pagnelli. The first of the cars was unveiled – coincidentally – on the same day the San Pedro boulevard was officially opened. All versions of the current Vanquish super GT in either Coupé or Volante form, the six bespoke cars are subtly different – each is tailored to reflect one of the six decades being celebrated.
