Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Mijas Pueblo

In recent years Fuengirola’s “Feria de los Pueblos” has grown and flourished to such an extent that it has become the premier event of its kind in Andalucía – arguably, in the whole of Spain. For many people, however, it is now so popular that its initial raison d’être has become overshadowed by an increasingly robust party ambience. For them, the quintessential celebration of foreign integration on the Costa del Sol remains Mijas International Day. Rather more quaint than Fuengirola’s extravaganza, and organised on a less grand scale, the 27th edition of the Mijas event – which has just concluded – once again enabled visitors to sample the culture, folklore and gastronomy of more than 20 countries in the town centre square. "This day is a reflection of the international co-existence enjoyed here all year, a reflection of the citizenship in Mijas and a tribute to the origins of many 'mijeños' who were born in other countries, but are already part of our community", said Manuel Navarro, the Mijas Town Hall councillor for industrial promotion and trade. One of the key aims of this “open and participatory” event is to showcase Mijas’s multicultural character – with more than 100 different nationalities represented in the municipality. Other municipalities along the Costa del Sol share Mijas’s captivating blend of contemporary living and traditional Spanish lifestyle but few, if any, can claim to have such a diverse geographic and residential panorama. From the classic white village of Mijas Pueblo, 450 metres above sea level (where the international day and other local fiestas are held throughout the year), the municipality extends down to the coast to the border with Fuengirola (Mijas Costa and Las Lagunas), west along the main highway to the beachside La Cala de Mijas, and all the way to the border with Marbella (Calahonda). But this week we focus on Mijas Pueblo… Over the centuries, Mijas has been home to other “international communities”. It was founded in prehistoric times by the Tartessians, and the remains of the original fortification can still be viewed on the parts of the town’s exterior wall. Ancient Greeks and Phoenicians were attracted by its mineral wealth, and the Romans had strong commercial links with an area they referred to as “Tamisa”. They were followed by the Visigoths and Moors, the latter abbreviating the term “Tamisa” to “Mixa”. More recently, like in many other municipalities on the Coast, Mijas residents mainly lived from farming and fishing, before modern-day tourism converted it into a thriving community of locals, Spaniards from other parts of the country and foreigners. Today, the village maintains that widespread appeal and popularity while still managing to maintain its Andalucian charm. Many foreigners moving to Mijas have been able to combine the convenience of close proximity to the township with the more secluded pleasures and attractions of a picturesque mountain residential setting. The villa featured here, for example, is located in the private Buenavista urbanisation, just a 10-minute drive from the beach, five minutes to the nearest restaurant/bar, 20 kilometres from Málaga international airport, and also close to Benalmádena and Fuengirola. True to the name of the urbanisation, its elevated position offers panoramic sea and coastal views; while the nearly 900 square metres of built area (on a 4,000 square metre plot) includes spacious living areas, a private pool, mature gardens, a wine cellar, en suite bathrooms with dressing rooms, and staff accommodation. Three years before the first Mijas International Day was held, Spain marked a significant national milestone in its integration with Europe. On 12 June 1985 – 30 years ago today – Spain and Portugal signed the Treat of Accession to the then European Economic Community (now European Union) at ceremonies in Madrid and Lisbon. The two countries officially became members on 1 January 1986, thus expanding the community from 10 to 12 states.
