Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Estepona
Estepona tends to be perceived as the quiet younger sibling of the Costa del Sol’s main resort areas. Málaga is the city-slick cultural capital, and Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Mijas the brash “touristy” destinations (although, of course, they have much more to offer than just sun, sand and sangria).
Marbella, meanwhile, captures much of the spotlight as the Coast’s most internationally celebrated glamour resort, highlighted by the exclusive Golden Mile and sybaritic Puerto Banús and the rejuvenated San Pedro de Alcántara with its new boulevard.
In recent years, Estepona municipality has attracted some of that limelight with its self-styled “New Golden Mile” – actually several kilometres of high-end residential areas along the coastline between Marbella and Estepona – but for many people it remains (in the common vernacular) a best-kept secret. Not for much longer.
On Saturday (28 March) Estepona Town Hall unveils a botanical park project which is home to one of Europe’s largest orchid displays, and earlier in March provincial authorities inaugurated the Felipe VI Auditorium, described as the Coast’s largest theatre setting with capacity for 600 people. In addition, a leading Madrid developer, IKasa, has unveiled plans for a 400-home, €200 million high-end housing project, Panoramia Estepona, on the outskirts of the town – thus providing another significant sign that prime new-build initiatives are back on the Costa property front-burner.
These announcements have given Estepona a renewed boost as the overall Spanish economic and real estate crisis eases, but the municipality has long been a hugely popular area for people seeking a new home in the Mediterranean sun.
One of the major attractions of this former fishing and farming village, and its surroundings (including 21 kilometres of coastline), is that it has maintained its traditional charm with cobblestoned streets and classic street cafés while modernising its amenities with upmarket shopping areas such as Laguna Village (to the east of the town), a bustling promenade and first-class leisure amenities (golf, tennis, nautical, etc.).
In such a vast municipality – extending from the sea to the mountains, and its borders with Marbella and Benahavís in the east to Casares in the west – the property options are extensive and varied. From sumptuous villas in gated urbanisations to frontline beach apartments… like the stunning complex featured here. Located on the “New Golden Mile”, within walking distance of restaurants and beach bars and just five minutes from central Estepona, it offers 24-hour security and CCTV, full concierge service, manicured gardens with a private white sand beach, and a year-round heated outdoor swimming pool. The apartment itself, all on one level, is actually two apartments that have been joined together. It features Siemens and Gaggenau appliances, a kitchen with breakfast area and fully-equipped bar, and a utility room or office leading to the formal dining room with a wine cellar and direct access to spacious enclosed terrace. The property also has a large master suite with dressing area and office corner, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and large walk-in shower; and is sold with two large parking spaces and a storage room.

Returning to the botanical garden… the project is part of Estepona Town Hall’s ongoing plans to boost the area’s brand as “The Garden of the Costa del Sol”, plans which also include the remodelling and embellishment of more than 60 streets in the old town.
Known as the “Pulmón Verde-Parque Botánico” (“Greenbelt-Botanical Park”), the project comprises three domed areas. The building housing the orchid collection is designed in a “vanguard” style crowned by a 30-metre high dome as well as a 17-metre waterfall, and is divided into two distinctive areas: for species from the Americas and Asia, respectively.
