Innovative Hub of Modern Design

Considered one of the most influential global showcases of contemporary design and creative innovation, this year’s London Design Festival involved more than 2,000 businesses including exhibitors at five “Design Destinations”. An all-encompassing hub of dynamic design, the festival encompasses the UK capital’s major trade shows, with partners ranging from emerging design studios to established international designers – both major institutions and sole traders, all displaying their latest ideas and many launching new products. The five “Design Destinations” were 100% Design, Decorex International, designjunction, Focus/14 and Tent London & Super Brands London. Interior and design show Decorex International marked the 300th anniversary of the Georgians by embracing the era as its 2014 theme. The organisers invited visitors to explore the “many parallels between the Georgians and today’s savvy consumer by embarking on a journey of discovery". The 20th edition of 100% Design, described as “the biggest design event in the UK”, returned to Earls Court as the only event during this year’s festival with a section dedicated to design innovation within the working environment. Explained show director William Knight, “Workplace design is a key area that has seen a growing demand in recent years. This very much reflects the way we work now – an office is no longer just a place where people work, it is also a hub where we exchange ideas and inspire each other.” In 2015, 100% Design will be re-launched in a new setting, within the iconic Grand Hall at Olympia in West London, just a short distance from the newly located Design Museum from 2016. Launched 12 years ago, the London Design Festival has nurtured an increasing number of “Design Districts”: areas of the city with a concentration of design expertise, retail outlets and creative enterprise. This year the initiative brought together six districts, Brompton, Chelsea, Clerkenwell, Islington, Queens Park and Shoreditch, highlighting the festival’s enduring conviction that “design can interest a public as well as a professional audience”. Visitors can still see some of this year’s installations at the V&A, including: Double Space for BMW designed by Barber & Osgerby; The Wish List, a collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council; and Crest by Zaha Hadid Architects and commissioned by Meliã Hotels International, remaining on show within the museum until 24 October. Carousel Wall, an installation by David David and Johnson Tiles, will stay until 31 January 2015. In addition, the HAY Mini Market – launched just before this year’s London Design Festival –will also remain open at Selfridges over the Christmas period, offering a variety of lighting and accessories from textiles and stationery to glassware. The 13th edition of the London Design Festival will be held from 19 to 27 September next year.
