Festive Gastronomic Delights on the Costa del Sol

If we were to ask Antonio Banderas what it is he most appreciates about living on the Costa del Sol he would undoubtedly pinpoint the local cuisine as one of his favourites. Why do we mention Banderas, you might wonder? Well, because in the same week that the art of Neapolitan pizza-making was added to UNESCO’s “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” – joining several other delicacies on the list including the “Mediterranean diet” – it was reported that the Málaga-born Hollywood star had bought a “significant” share in Bodega Bar El Pimpi. Located in Málaga city’s historic centre, not far from Museo Picasso and adjacent to Banderas’s own penthouse, El PImpi is an iconic institution in the capital, a tapas and wine tavern created in 1971 that includes a room full of barrels signed by famous visitors. The newly structured company plans to expand its business to include a catering service and gastronomy academy, and has established the El Pimpi Foundation to promote cultural and social facets of Málaga’s culinary legacy. As we have reported previously, Banderas is also closely involved in plans to transform the Teatro Alameda into a major theatre, studio and gastronomy project. With our appetites whetted at this latest gourmet news, we checked out some of the other local highlights of this “Immaculate Conception” long weekend that would especially appeal to foodies, and found some appetising options for all tastes in Diario Sur’s excellent “Weekend Leisure Agenda”… Mercadillo Navideño Torrox: Located towards the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, Torrox village claims to have the best climate in Europe, ideal then to visit its Christmas market offering a diverse range of artisanal products up to and including Sunday. Feria Sabor a Málaga: Promoting the “Tastes of Málaga”, this grand fair moves this year from the La Malagueta bullring to the Eduardo Ocón auditorium in the capital city’s Parque area, where visitors can savour local products and enjoy activities related to the Costa’s cuisine. Feria de la Chacon: Benaoján is a charming village located in Grazalema nature park in the northern part of Málaga province, where this weekend a themed market offers just about every imaginable cured, seasoned and cold meat product derived from pigs. Feria de la Artesanías Valle del Genal: Benalauría, a village in the Ronda mountains, is hosting its annual artisans fair, with organic products from La Molienda Verde, cheeses, cured meats, confectionary, wines and liqueurs, as well as home decoration items. This is also the end of the chestnut season in the area. Mercadillo Navideño La Concepción: These splendid botanical gardens on the city outskirts are holding a Christmas fair on Sunday offering culinary products as well as apparel, accessories, ceramics, arts and antiques. Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina Colmenar: Also this Sunday, a fair is being held in Colmenar, in the Montes de Málaga mountain area, where cured meats, honey, wine, cheeses, olive oil and confectionary will be on sale. Best of all? Local establishments offer free tapas with your bought drinks. Luxury Living We stay in the province’s inland mountain area for our featured home of the week: a stunning farmhouse on 60,000 square metres of private and fenced property just minutes from Monda village – and priced at an excellent €2 million.
