The faces might not be all that familiar to foreign visitors, unless they are assiduous viewers of the ubiquitous “prensa rosa” TV gossip programmes, but a veritable red carpet of Spanish high society heads to Sotogrande every summer.
Many spend most of their time discreetly behind the high walls of the ultra-select urbanisation’s grand mansions, only venturing out for private dinner parties or to take the children to a beach club or other exclusive leisure activity.

One event few miss, however, is the month-long Land Rover International Tournament, held at Santa Maria Polo Club’s Los Pinos fields and concluding tomorrow (Saturday 30 September), with the final of the Bulgari Gold Cup.
Just how important this competition rates in the world polo world is highlighted by the fact that the top two teams in the world have qualified for the grand finale: the US “Valiente”, captained by the top-ranked polo player in the world, Argentinean Adolfo Cambiaso; and the Australian “Ellerston”, with another Argentinean on the team, world number two Facundo Pieres.

A sedate day watching polo might be the main item on the agenda for such illustrious visitors as Jaime de Marichalar (divorced ex-husband of Elena, the eldest daughter of abdicated King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía) and his two children, Victoria and Felipe; horseman, duke and count Cayetano Martinez de Irujo, son of the wonderfully eccentric multi-titled Duchess of Alba; actresses and TV presenters Sonia Ferrer and Laura Dibildos; and a long etcetera of famous surnames… Patrick Hermes, Inés Domecq, Juan March.

Bimba & Charlie[/caption]
But for those seeking a little more robust “after polo” evening action Grey Goose obliged with a White Party with two special guests, DJs Bimba (niece of veteran Spanish singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé) and her boyfriend Charlie; while another big night out was had by all at the Indi Fusion Experience.

Away from the polo field, the other major social highlight of the Sotogrande summer was the inauguration of Trocadero Sotogrande, formerly the El Cucurucho Beach Club. More than 2,000 guests enjoyed gourmet canapés, live music, DJ sounds and dancing into the early hours at the African colonial-style club.
For spectators and revellers wanting a temporary change of pace, something a little more aesthetically sophisticated than Grey Goose and Bacardi, Portuguese high-end furniture company Boca Do Lobo, together with Lladro, set up a special room decorated with its Mondrian and Diamond sideboards and golden Wave tables.

Of course another excellent way to enjoy a Sotogrande summer, when the polo and partying becomes too much, is to go house hunting.
