Celebrity Watch… Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas
The man sitting quietly in the corner of a cafeteria in Ronda looked familiar. Sporting a full greying beard, partly concealed behind sunglasses, casually dressed and accompanied by his girlfriend, he was unrecognisable to most people who had crossed his path that afternoon in Ronda. However, one client in Confitería Daver had a strong inkling of his identity.
Natividad García asked the waitress, who confirmed it was in fact Mel Gibson. “I’ve been a fan of his all my life,” she told the Diario Sur newspaper later. My husband encouraged me to go up to him, I asked him if he would remove his sunglasses for the photo, and he agreed. He was very friendly. He even paid for my coffee!”
The previous day, 60-year-old Gibson and Rosalind Ross (25), a former equestrian vaulting champion and aspiring scriptwriter, had visited Granada after flying in from Madrid. They joined other tourists for a guided tour of the Alhambra, and enjoyed lunch and a flamenco show in the city before continuing their Spanish getaway in Ronda.

Meanwhile, our favourite Costa del Sol celebrity, Antonio Banderas, has announced that – in his fashion designer guise – he will officially present his first clothing line, Design by Selected Homme, at the Pasarela Larios fashion show in Málaga in September.
Also expected to be released for sale in shops in September, the collection comprises 25 items for autumn/winter. According to Selected, its strong point is versatility. “Banderas wanted to include items of clothing for all kinds of men, suitable for different situations.” Banderas himself noted when he officially inaugurated the new headquarters in Churriana (Málaga) of Danish multinational textile company Bestseller in March, “We’ve tried to create a complete wardrobe so men can feel confident, comfortable and handsome at the same time.”
The Málaga-born actor – who owns a penthouse apartment in the city centre and a villa in Marbella – has just completed filming the psychological thriller “Black Butterfly” in Rome, and will next be working on a romantic comedy, “Salty”, in Puerto Rico before starting on a project in autumn that is especially close to his heart: a movie based on Pablo Picasso (who was also born in Málaga, not far from the actor’s current apartment) and his creation of the famous “Guernica” painting.
Returning to Ronda, this weekend the town celebrates its annual “Ronda Romántica” historical recreation of 19th century bandits, romantic travellers and mule drivers, with a series of colourful events, exhibitions, markets and contests.
