7 Holiday Attractions for Families on the Costa del Sol

The holidays are drawing to a close and families who have been enjoying a splendidly leisurely summer by the Mediterranean will be starting to prepare for the dreaded return to work and school. However, for those still in holiday mode, or foreign residents with children in Spanish schools (which tend to resume later than others in Europe after the summer break) or visitors with the luxury of being able to take time off in September, there is still plenty to do on the Costa del Sol. Here we offer seven distinctive attractions and activities – a full week of fun – for parents wanting to keep the kids well occupied and happy over the final days of summer.
  1. Beginning with the classic Costa holiday activity: a day at the beach. But not just ensconced by the shoreline all day. The Coast’s most popular beaches offer a diverse series of activities for the whole family, from floating playgrounds out in the sea to beginners’ classes in paddle surf.
  2. If you have already had enough beach this summer, how about spending the day at a water park? The two main ones on the Coast are Parque Acuático Mijas and Aqualand Torremolinos – where lifeguards keep an eye on the youngsters as they excitedly rush from one thrilling ride to another, while Mum and Dad can enjoy a chilled beer in the cool shade of a cafeteria terrace.
  3. For a taste of adventure, Amazona’s treetop park in Elviria (eastern Marbella) offers ecologically-friendly routes through the pine forest; while further down the coast the Teleférico Benalmádena cable car transports passengers 800 metres above sea level to Mount Calamorro – with a planetarium open at the peak on summer evenings.
  4. Fuengirola’s Biopark is not just any traditional zoo. In addition to its exotic habitats, it runs an internationally recognised breeding programme for endangered species. Also worth a visit for animal lovers is the Selwo Aventura wildlife park near Estepona, Crocodile Park Torremolinos, Mariposario Benalmádena butterfly museum, Selwo Marina and Sealife Benalmádena.
  5. Thanks to an initiative supported by the Royal Andalucian Golf Federation, children can play for free at several Costa golf clubs during the summer months when accompanied by an adult – with lessons also available for those taking up the game.
  6. A copyright marketing dispute is threatening Júzcar’s future as “Pueblo Pitufo” (“Smurf Village”) but there is still time to explore the magical delights of this town completely painted in blue, in the north-western part of Málaga province.
  7. Finally, how about visiting a local animal shelter and adopting one of their residents so desperate for a new home with a loving family. You would be in excellent company. Earlier this month, Julio Iglesias’s 16-year-old twin daughters Victoria and Cristina made a discreet visit to Parque Zoosanitario in Málaga, where they chose three dogs known as “invisibles” (because they are the hardest to find homes for), took them back to the Iglesias family mansion in Ojén (bordering Marbella municipality) and later travelled by private jet to one of the family’s other homes in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
Luxury Living If you would like to live in a luxury apartment not far from the Iglesias clan’s sprawling mountain property, the Palo Alto development in Ojén offers a natural setting and cutting-edge features (this apartment is priced at an excellent €641,685).
