Poetry in motion, cruising Marbella style

Yachts and supercar Puerto BanusBeautiful cars have always been a part of the scene in privileged locations where luxury lifestyles can be enjoyed. Marbella is a fine example of this, and where in other towns the Toyota Corolla or Volkswagen Golf might be the top seller, here it is the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport or sleek Audi convertibles that vie for your attention. But many a private garage in the luxurious villas that straddle the hills and coastline of Marbella contains even more exquisite collections of motoring works of art. These can range from fun vintage models shown off at enthusiasts’ gatherings to rare classics bought at auction. Naturally this town has its lovers of high-octane power too, with the Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis particularly keen to take to the roads in the beautiful clear weather and golden light of this southernmost region of Europe. Ascari race tract Costa del SolWhile the owners’ clubs enjoy getting together for gentlemanly treks across the province it is at special members’ tracks such as Race Resort Ascari that drivers can really unleash their super cars in a safe and legal way. Situated in a gloriously green valley just east of the country town of Ronda, Race Resort Ascari is a meticulously laid out private members club where car enthusiasts can not only race for the day, have their cars prepared and maintained, and if required ‘stabled’, but it also offers a suitably stylish environment in which the whole family can enjoy the experience. Founded by Dutch entrepreneur and motoring enthusiast Klaas Zwart, the circuit is a succession of his favourite F1 bends and sections. The result is a stunning facility made for racing lovers and designed in such a way that noise is minimal and the circuit appears integrated into its surroundings. Built with obvious sensitivity to the environment, the actual track is but a small part of a verdant complex of gardens, state-of-the-art garages, pits facilities, a luxurious boutique hotel and an ambient clubhouse complete with restaurant, bar, lounge areas and pool deck that is the social hub of Race Resort Ascari. It is here that enthusiasts compare their track times and anecdotes, plan their entry in the next classic car rally and stop for a chat with the man who built all of this and also produced the Ascari super cars. You might even see a Formula One driver or rally champ arriving at the helipad – quite a tale to tell your fellow petrol heads at the golf club or as you cruise down Marbella’s avenues and its glamorous Puerto Banús marina.
