Macaulay Culkin at Home But Not Alone in Antequera
Celebrity spotters would have had to be really on the ball this past week to catch the first Hollywood star of the spring season visiting Málaga. No use lurking on the Puerto Bánus frontline, or sneaking into an exclusive Nueva Andalucía golf clubhouse, or hovering outside a five-star deluxe Marbella hotel. The place to be was Antequera – several kilometres away from the Costa del Sol’s hotspots, near the northern border of Málaga province – where former child star Macaulay “Home Alone” Culkin was filming an advertising spot for an Australian insurance comparison company.
Onlookers suspected something unusual was occurring when one of the streets around the historic Torcal Cine Teatro was closed, and a film crew began setting up lights and props. Then, early evening, Culkin – now 35 and sporting a beard – pulled up in a van and was filmed walking along a red carpet into the theatre before departing almost as ephemerally as he had arrived.
Later, Antequera mayor Manuel Barón highlighted the city’s flourishing credentials as a setting for film productions… Vincent D’onofrio and Adria Arjona had also been in the area late last year, filming for the forthcoming HBO fantasy series Emerald City. Built in 1933, the Torcal building has official cultural heritage status, although on this occasion it was decorated in the style of a Californian cinema.
Meanwhile, Antequera locals are awaiting a decision that could have even more positive repercussions for the tourist industry than its growing popularity with film companies. The Antequera Dolmen Sites have been nominated for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and an announcement is expected in July.
An ensemble of monuments made up of the Menga and Viera dolmens and the tholos of El Romeral, they are described by UNESCO as “outstanding examples of megalithic architecture and are amongst the most recognised and quoted in the world… The positioning of the Menga dolmen is unique, towards the north-east; it is the only dolmen in continental Europe that is positioned towards a land object, towards the mountain of the Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers’ Leap).”
Returning from the Cosmos and back on Planet Earth… it is an International Workers’ Day long weekend in Spain (with the 1 May public holiday being moved from Sunday to Monday) and several activities are scheduled both inland and on the coast over the next three days.
The highlight is Fuengirola’s Feria de Los Pueblos, a celebration of the area’s diverse nationalities and cosmopolitan lifestyle, which attracts thousands of visitors to the town fairground over five days of vibrant festivities.

Probably not the best time to be considering buying a home nearby, if you are not a hardcore party animal and prefer to be tucked up in bed and ready for sleep at an early hour. Far better the property featured here, also in the heart of a town centre but in this case the rather more tranquil Mijas Pueblo (at least this weekend), just a short drive up the road from Fuengirola and priced at a superb €1,995,000.
