Timeless Classics With A Cutting-Edge Sparkle

[caption id="attachment_2259" align="alignright" width="225"] Breguet Classic Chronométrie[/caption] People already thinking ahead about gifts for family and friends this festive season – or even wanting to treat themselves to a special indulgence – would have found some glittering inspiration at the annual Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) prize-giving gala. At least when it comes to state-of-art timepieces… and where better to follow up such thoughts than Puerto Banús with a lavish day of retail therapy or early Christmas gift shopping at the glitzy marina’s many top boutiques. Held in the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the 14th edition of the GPHG rewarded excellence, innovation and watchmaking expertise, presenting 16 prizes covering men and women’s models. [caption id="attachment_2263" align="alignright" width="150"] Urwerk EMC[/caption] The Foundation of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève’s annual mission is “to fly the Swiss watchmaking banner around the world” and, to that end, this year watch brands were able to compete in new, more specific categories designed for chronographs, tourbillons, perpetual calendar and chiming models, as well as mechanical exceptions. The competition was open to all watchmaking brands, irrespective of nationality, although only watches launched on the market after March 2013 and before the end of November 2014 were eligible to enter the competition. Recognised for their “exceptional contribution to the watchmaking sector”, 24 people including master-watchmaker and Swiss design genius Philippe Dufour were brought together by the Foundation to make up the 2014 jury, under the stewardship of president Aurel Bacs. [caption id="attachment_2271" align="alignright" width="150"] Christophe Claret Margot[/caption] [caption id="attachment_2269" align="alignright" width="150"] Bulgari Diva High Jewellery[/caption] In line with their remit to honour the GPHG’s commitment to “promoting an art of watchmaking that is both respectful of traditions and focused on values of creative excellence and innovation”, they presented the supreme prize, the “Aiguille d’Or”, to Breguet for its Classic Chronométrie model. The Swiss watchmaker enjoyed a double celebration on the night, with members of the public – after votes cast on the internet and at international exhibitions – selecting Breguet’s Classique Dame as their favourite for the “Public Prize”. The Classic Chronométrie features a case in 18-carat rose gold with a finely fluted caseband and sapphire crystal caseback, and an 18-carat gold and silvered dial engine-tuned in six different patterns. The leather strap comes with a triple-blade folding clasp, and the watch is also available in a white-gold case. [caption id="attachment_2277" align="alignleft" width="150"] Zenith El Primero[/caption] [caption id="attachment_2275" align="alignleft" width="150"] Voutilainen Hisui[/caption] Another brand taking home two prizes in Geneva was Urwerk, its EMC model being named best in the “Mechanical Exception” and “Innovation” categories. Other main winners for 2014 included: Bulgari’s Diva High Jewellery Emeralds (“Jewellery”); Christophe Claret’s Margot (“Ladies’ High-Mech”); Zenith’s El Primero Lightweight (“Sports”); and Voutilainen’s Hisui (“Artistic Crafts”).
