Showpiece Homes, Luxury Living… and Historic Cars

Sometimes it must seem to visitors as though Puerto Banús is all about glitzy sophistication. And in many ways it is: that is a key aspect of the luxury resort’s international appeal. But there is also another more endearing and charming side to Banús, and Marbella in general… An enduring link with the area’s traditional past as a modest fishing village surrounded by farmland. An era when the pace was considerably less frenetic, and when the simpler things in life took precedence over lavish lunches, glamorous soirées and party revellers swathed in jewellery and designer clothes. This week, a fascinating glimpse into that past is being provided by three dozen passionate members of the Costa del Sol Historic Cars Club. A showcase of 35 cars dating from between 1910 and 1950 – “jewels on four wheels in perfect condition” – the club’s fourth edition of the Costa del Sol Route begins today (Friday) and continues until Sunday. At a press presentation earlier this week, members of the club committee extended an invitation to motoring enthusiasts to check out these exceptional vehicles as they cruise along the coastal roads, with stopovers at various points along the way. The first day of the rally began on the San Pedro de Alcántara promenade Friday morning before heading off to Estepona then on to Benahavís and returning to the home base in Puerto Banús (Hotel PYR). This evening (from 8.15pm), members and companions dressed in period attire will drive their cars in procession to the San Pedro boulevarde, where they are due to remain on show for onlookers until just after 10pm. On Saturday, with the participants dressed in period costume for the whole day, the rally will once again start on the San Pedro promenade before travelling along the main coastal road to Mijas Pueblo then back down the road to Fuengirola, where the cars will be parked in the port area (until 6pm) while the rally participants enjoy lunch. After that, back to Puerto Banús and a private gala dinner and prize-giving ceremony at the Nuevo Reino restaurant on the San Pedro beach. On Sunday, the cars will make a tour of the streets of San Pedro (between approximately 10 and 11pm) before moving on to Marbella and another tour of the town centre and promenade, culminating in a stopover between the lighthouse and Santiago seafood restaurant. Finally, the three-day rally will conclude back on the San Pedro promenade, with the vehicles remaining on display until 5pm. Another highlight of this weekend’s activities on the Coast is the 15th edition of the Artisanal Cheese Fair in the charming village of Teba, located in the north-eastern part of Málaga province about 15 kilometres from Ardales. Blessed with a rich Andalucian architectural heritage, the town was the site of the Battle of Teba in 1330 (during the Reconquest), where Sir James Douglas, a friend and lieutenant of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, was killed. On his deathbed, Bruce had implored Douglas to take his embalmed heart and bear it with him on a crusade and, fatefully as it turned out, he decided the Spanish war provided the perfect opportunity to accede to his monarch’s request. But back to modern-day Teba… The cheese fair brings together 50 exhibitors including 40 of the most renowned artisanal cheese-makers in Andalucía plus top producers from other parts of Spain. The exhibition is open from 11am to 8pm on Saturday and from 10am to 6pm on Sunday. The town of 4,000 welcomes as many as 10,000 visitors during the fair, many of whom combine the culinary pleasures (numerous bars and restaurants also offer their own specialities) with a tour of the town’s main monuments. Next week, meanwhile, the focus is back on Marbella, which hosts the 10th International Film Festival. Forty films from around the world (including Japan, Panama, United States, United Kingdom, Russia and Israel, as well as Spain) will be shown at Cines TeatroGoya Marbella in Puerto Banús from 7 to 11 October. The films will be screened in original version, with sub-titles in English or Spanish. As San Pedro de Alcántara is the hub of this year’s Costa del Sol Route, here we feature a stunning beachside penthouse oozing with luxury features (and excellent value at €1,050,000).
