There will be ample reason next week to be in a happy frame of mood. Well, at least on Monday anyway, according to the United Nations. That date, 20 March, is officially International Day of Happiness, which was launched in 2011 to recognise happiness as a “fundamental human goal”. An admirable sentiment, and to mark the occasion we review some of the “happy” news enjoyed by the Spanish property market in recent weeks. First of all… An online poll carried out by international relocations company MoveHub found that living overseas is good for health, wealth and happiness. Half of the 1,000 respondents (in the UK and Ireland) had spent time abroad, and the other half had not.

A total of 63 per cent of the expats described themselves as happy or very happy, compared with only 53 per cent of others who had lived in just one country. Sixty-nine per cent of expats rated their health as good or very good, compared with 58 per cent of non-expats; and 40 per cent of those who had experienced life overseas said they were earning top money or were on a good salary, compared with 28 per cent of those who had always lived in their home country. Meanwhile, a report by US News & World found that Spain is the best country in the world to travel alone, praising the appeal of its security, variety, history and culture. “There’s no need for a partner during a late night stroll by the Alhambra,” gushed the report. “Flamenco can be watched at a table of one. And tapas taste just the same alone as in a crowd.” The report was categorised into several themes and, not surprisingly, Spain scored a perfect 10 for having the best climate. It also ranked third for being a “highly fun” place full of “adventure”.
