Showpiece Homes, Luxury Living… and Benahavís

There are several reasons why Benahavís could be considered the Costa del Sol’s showpiece municipality. Okay, so it doesn’t have a beach, but the dazzling San Pedro de Alcántara coastline is just a five-minute drive away from Benahavís village – and there is a diverse array of other attractions to “console” residents and visitors rueing the absence of their own stretch of Mediterranean sand. In the first place, the municipality is one of the most fascinatingly far-reaching on the Coast, extending from its southern borders with Marbella and Estepona through sweeping mountain ranges to the ultra-exclusive La Zagaleta residential estate on the Ronda road. In between are numerous other high-end urbanisations, including Los Flamingos, Los Arqueros, El Madroñal and part of La Quinta.

The village itself is a mecca for foodies, dubbed the “Costa del Sol’s dining room” thanks to a sumptuous variety of restaurants, cafeterías and tapas bars, and the ideal starting point for an invigorating hike through the surrounding hills, valleys and riverbeds. This same countryside is a popular setting for horse-riding, four-wheel-drive and quad routes and river descents; and, for those enjoying more sedate pursuits, bird-watching and excursions by flora aficionados. Benahavís can also make the proud boast of having the highest number of golf courses per capita of any municipality in Spain: 11 in all, complemented by an excellent municipal golf academy. All of these attractions have been carefully nurtured by a town hall keen to preserve Benahavís’s classic charm as a one-time Moorish fortress while catering for the 21st century needs of an increasingly discerning, and cosmopolitan, population. To that end, this week the town hall provisionally approved a new General Urban Ordinance Plan that envisages approval for 2,000 new homes. These will be added to 4,000 other homes previously agreed in two interim plans and approved by the Junta de Andalucía (regional government), for the Monte Mayor and La Quinta residential areas.

Benahavís is one of the Costa del Sol municipalities with the greatest amount of available land for construction – and among the most highly valued in the local real estate market. Less than one per cent of Benahavís’s 145 square kilometres is built area, and the resident population is just 6,600. In tune with the town’s traditional construction, most of the new homes will be single-family, distributed throughout the municipality and carefully developed in stages according to demand, although town hall sources quoted by the Diario Sur newspaper noted that this would be “in a short period of time”. In the meantime, the stylish five-bedroom property featured here is one of just 14 exclusive villas in the Mirabella Hills gated community in La Alquería, and available at the excellent price of €1,950,000.
