Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Selwo

In recent years, tourism authorities have made a concerted effort to highlight the fact that the Costa del Sol is not all about sun, sea and sangria. They have pointed to the extensive and varied sports amenities (the “Costa del Golf” is, for example, Europe’s premier golf destination), the culinary and cultural diversity, and such stunning inland attractions as the awe-inspiring Caminito del Rey. Then – of particular appeal to families – there are the amusement, leisure, adventure and nature parks. From Aquavelis water park east of Málaga city to Selwo safari park between Marbella and Estepona (which borders this week’s featured property) – and north to Antequera – Málaga province (incorporating the Costa del Sol) offers a veritable playground of fun this summer, and for most of the year. In fact, as an updated post on the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) website highlights, there are no fewer than 16 “leisure parks” in the province. Water Delights: It’s summer so the most popular attractions are invariably the Coast’s three fun-filled water parks, starting in the east with Aquavelis (Torre del Mar), offering 10 different attractions for all ages and open until 8 September. Moving west, in addition to such attractions as the “Boomerang”, "Anaconda", "Espiral", "Twister" and "Super Slalom", Aqualand Torremolinos (open until 21 September) has an extensive restaurant area and an 18-hole min-golf complex. The Coast’s third water park is Aquapark Mijas, conveniently linked to the Coast’s main centres and open to the end of September. Amusement and Adventure: Almost an institution on the Coast for generations of families, Tivoli World in Arroyo de la Miel (Benalmádena municipality) is full of gardens and fountains – and both classical and latest-generation amusement attractions. Perhaps not for vertigo sufferers, but with maximum safety precautions in place, Aventura Amazonia Marbella (in Elviria) is Andalucía’s largest tree adventure eco-park. Created in the mid-19th century by the Marquess and Marchioness of Loring, and open all year (Tuesdays to Sundays), they feature an open-air collection of tropical and sub-tropical flora, including plant species from Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. The recently inaugurated Greenbelt-Botanical Park in Estepona comprises three domed areas including an orchid collection with species from the Americas and Asia (open every day except Monday). Biopark Fuengirola represents a new zoo model based on ethical care of wild animals in recreations of their natural habitats, with an architectural design known as “zoo immersion” Other enthralling settings offering close-up experiences with a wide cross-section of animal species are the Crocodile Park in Torremolinos, Wolf Park in Antequera (on the road to Granada), Butterfly Park and Valley of the Eagles in Benalmádena, and (for marine life) Sea Life Underwater Park and Selwo Marina, also in Benalmádena… Plus the aforementioned Selwo Aventura with more than 2,000 animals from around the world living in semi-freedom and in conditions similar to their natural habitats. And finally… for spectacular views over the coastline and beyond to northern Africa, the Benalmádena Cable Car is a 15-minute journey covering three kilometres from the coast to the nearby mountain peak. Meanwhile, for property buyers, this attractive villa located on an elevated 3,000 square metre site on the borders of the Selwo safari park offers panoramic views of the sea and mountains, and privacy and security behind electric gates with a private service entrance – just 10 minutes from Puerto Banús. The home extends over 350 square metres of built area, with four bedrooms (and the possibility of a fifth bedroom conversion), a large terrace, three and a half bathrooms, two living rooms with a split-level dining room, a rustic kitchen, a cinema room, large storage rooms and a double garage.
