Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Nagüeles

It is one of the most discreetly select residential areas in southern Spain but over the next few weeks its sedate, tree-lined streets will be witnessing a flurry of activity as they come under the international spotlight. Well, perhaps not all the streets (except for those stumbled into by visitors whose GPS apparatuses are faulty) – and certainly not the entire residential area – but there will be some significantly increased vehicle transit in the northern heights of mid-town Marbella this month and next. The area is Nagüeles – plus the ultra-exclusive surrounding urbanisations of Sierra Blanca, Cascada de Camoján and La Capellania – and the event is the Starlite Festival. This annual festival, which began on 18 July and continues until 22 August, is held in a revamped open-air amphitheatre setting in a former quarry – the Auditorio de Marbella (La Cantera) – overlooking the coast and on the upper border of the residential area. First-time visitors driving through Nagüeles and its neighbouring estates to arrive at the festival venue (where ample parking is available, as well as an efficient shuttle bus service) will be able to admire an exceptional diversity of homes, ranging from townhouses and apartment villas in secure gated communities to palatial mansions sitting as majestic centrepieces in the midst of stunningly landscaped plots – again, safely and privately tucked away behind high walls. In addition to their proximity to the natural parkland and protected forests of Nagüeles, and the verdant tranquillity this bestows on the area (even during Starlite Festival month!), these homes also enjoy magnificent views over the coast and are just a short drive from Marbella city centre, Puerto Banús and the municipality’s many golf courses and other top leisure amenities… Plus, at the moment, with privileged access to the Starlite Festival. Now in its fourth year, the festival is considered one of Europe’s premier cultural events – with a daily schedule of music, fashion, art, film and gastronomy. In previous years Ricky Martin, Tom Jones, Bryan Adams, the Pet Shop Boys and Tony Bennett have performed at the festival, while this year the irrepressible Lenny Kravitz opened the concert schedule this past week. The 2015 non-music entertainment also got underway with a haute fashion show by Elena Benarroch “and friends” including Ronda-born designer David Delfin. Other top performers in July include Placido Domingo (25th), Lionel Ritchie (29th) and Village People (31st); and among those scheduled to perform in August are Melendi (3rd), Julio Iglesias (5th), Rodger Hodgson (6th), Enrique Iglesias (13th), Anastacia (18th), Symphonic Rhapsody of Queen (19th) and, for the coupe de grace on 22 August, Andrea Bocelli. Every year the organisers also dedicate an evening to philanthropy, the Starlite Gala hosted by Antonio Banderas, who was born in Málaga city and has a holiday villa on the eastern outskirts of Marbella’s town centre. This year the gala will be held on 9 August. In addition, special shows and DJ sessions are being held throughout the month-long festival in the lounge and disco area, highlighted by a tribute (including a film presentation) to guitar maestro Paco de Lucía on 20 July, and also including the gala final of Miss Universe Spain on 30 July. With concerts not featuring every night, the lounge area is the main regular meeting point for revellers, a cool summer venue that offers fashion shows by both renowned designers and emerging talents, art exhibitions, movie premieres (the quarry is said to have the biggest cinema screen in Spain), various stage artists, and a wide and varied selection of culinary options, from VIP dining areas to more informal café-style establishments. Finally, at midnight the lounge area turns into “the only club in a quarry”, with guests able to party until 6am with special fiestas, top DJs, musicals and other pulsating soirées.
