Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Las Lomas

[caption id="attachment_2547" align="alignright" width="300"] Tranquil living in Las Lomas del Marbella Club [/caption] The origins of Spain’s popularity as an international tourist destination are generally considered to date to the 1960s. General Franco was keen (or desperate) to attract revenue after years of buttoned-down dictatorship, and visitors from colder northern climes saw Spain – including the Costa del Sol – as an excellent option for their winter holidays. The authorities even stifled their puritanical instincts by allowing bikinis to be worn on the beaches (at least by women anyway!). It was, however, two decades earlier when a significant event occurred in Marbella which had perhaps an even more profound (albeit more gradual and elite) effect on future tourism to Spain. The year was 1946, when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe acquired the 120,000 square metre Finca Santa Margarita estate by the Mediterranean and converted it into his private residence. Defining luxury as a “blend of privacy and gardens”, over the years his vision was transformed into a sumptuous meeting point for the wealthy and famous from around the world. His family residence became an exclusive 20-room club and, later, the Marbella Club Hotel Golf Resort & Spa – just a short walk from the property featured here. Located in the heart of Marbella’s “Golden Mile” the hotel now comprises luxury rooms, suites and villas decorated by prestigious professionals with exclusive Mediterranean-style interior designs and offering tranquillity, nature and exclusivity (again, much like this stunning villa). The hotel’s communal amenities also include a Champagne Room redesigned by interior designer Jean-Pierre Martel “to reflect modern luxury whilst evoking the ambience of a golden age” when early jet-setters such as Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Maria Callas, Audrey Hepburn, Gunther Sachs, Aristotle Onassis, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Ted Kennedy sipped champagne by the sea and danced the night away at the club. In nearby Las Lomas del Marbella Club, this six-bedroom home with 820 square metres of built area and 208 square metres of terrace on a 2,502 square metre plot, captures much of the luxurious essence of its illustrious “neighbour”. The ground floor comprises four large en-suite bedrooms, and a double living area with fireplace, dining room and kitchen; while the first floor is taken up with a spacious master bedroom with a large terrace offering exceptional views. All areas are accessible by stairs or elevator, the villa has a full home automation system, burglar and fire protection, cooling, heating, and audio and video equipment throughout. There is a separate entrance for guests or an au pair, a 305 square metre basement for a movie theatre, billiards room and cellar, and a large window overlooking the indoor pool and sauna, as well as a covered pergola with outdoor kitchen and living room.
