Showing off on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada, Southern SpainOver the decades Marbella has carefully cultivated a reputation for being somewhat of a playground for the rich and famous. Thanks to its multitude of ritzy restaurants, fashionable bars, world class golf courses and swish social events, there’s always somewhere for the town’s glitterati to dress up and be seen. However, in the winter months many of Marbella’s jet set residents swap the haut chic hangouts of town for the snowy slopes of the Sierra Nevada.  At just over two hours from Marbella by car, this is an ideal weekend getaway for snow fans with a penchant for prestigious pistes and dressing in matching designer ski gear. In fact, such is the popularity with Marbella residents, that the town’s prestigious Marbella Club Hotel even opened a luxurious ski lodge there last year. Known as El Lodge, this luxury ski and spa resort was built in an Alpine style featuring Finnish wood throughout, with all rooms enjoying fabulous views over the Sierra Nevada. Staying at this elite establishment also allows skiers to sample the legendary après ski that takes place once the sun sets in the resort’s village, Pradollano. El Lodge, Sierra NevadaFans of the slopes will also be delighted to know there are dozens of bars, restaurants, cafés and even nightclubs in this snow-capped resort. The links with Marbella don’t stop there either; in the past the Sierra Nevada regularly welcomed the town’s most famous residents for an afternoon on the slopes, including Sean Connery and Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe. Not to be outdone, even Prince Felipe of Spain and his wife Leticia have been known to arrive by helicopter for a few days of downhill fun. In addition, the recently launched Marbella Ski Club ferries groups up to the slopes each week, should you not fancy driving yourself. So with the resort now open for its famously long winter season, grab your ski gear and find out why everyone is heading to the Sierra Nevada. Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7aoO2xaM8s
