From Pamela Anderson to Foreigner and the Beach Boys
Baywatch star Pamela Anderson inaugurated the celebrity soirée season in Marbella last month, appropriately on the beach, and now Foreigner will be launching an exceptional summer concert schedule. The legendary rock band will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in Marbella this weekend, with a concert on Sunday (11 June) at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa’s centre tennis court (where Seal performed last year).
In May Foreigner presented a new (perhaps not all that imaginatively titled) album, “40 – Forty Hits From Forty Years”, to commemorate the milestone.
Also performing this summer at the same venue (Thursday 6 July) are Crazy 80s Live, with a line-up including Billy Ocean, Heather Small (M People vocalist) and Right Said Fred – “playing all their hits,” according to the organisers. Then guitar maestro George Benson, a regular concert visitor to Marbella, returns on Friday 21 July, and Michael Bolton will be performing on Thursday 10 August.
Meanwhile, there is more top concert action down the coast in Fuengirola, where the Marenostrum Music Castle Park will be set up for a second consecutive year on the slopes between the sea and the town’s iconic Solhail castle. Sting opens the schedule on 17 July, presenting his new album, “57th and 9th”, together with Beirut-born Spanish violinist Ara Malikian. For those with a penchant for Spanish pop-rock, veterans Loquillo and Revolver will be headlining “La Noche Rosa” on 29 July.
Up the hill within the walls of the castle, the City of Fuengirola Festival schedule will comprise seven concerts this year, highlighted by the Beach Boys, who will perform on 24 June after apparently having specifically requested that the venue (which has capacity for 2,500 spectators) be included on their tour.
Other concerts featured at the castle are Michael Nyman, composer of the soundtrack for The Piano (tomorrow 10 June); and Jamie Cullen on 25 July.
Even further along the coast, east of Málaga city, more than 80 artists have been signed up for Weekend Beach Torre del Mar, among them The Prodigy.
Returning to Marbella, the sixth annual edition of the Starlite Festival has been expanded this year to 45 uninterrupted days, running from 13 July to 26 August. Among the top international performers for 2017 are Anastacia (15 July), Art Garfunkel (16 July), Elton John (20 July), Pretenders (26 July) and the Cranberries (15 August) – but more about that extravaganza of music, gastronomy, art and fashion closer to the date.
In the meantime, following last week’s Marbella Luxury weekend (with its series of ultra-exclusive private soirées), the more public-orientated 17th annual Puerto Banús International Arts & Crafts Festival was inaugurated this week and will remain open in the Antonio Banderas Plaza until 31 August.
Finally, the Marbella fair in honour of patron saint San Bernabé draws to a characteristically vibrant conclusion this long weekend (Monday is a local holiday in Marbella), with the main religious procession on Sunday.
