Costa Memories… George Michael, Carrie Fisher and Antonio Banderas

The sad news this past week of the deaths of pop star George Michael and actress Carrie Fisher brought back memories of their respective visits to the Costa del Sol in 1989. Michael was in Málaga as part of his Faith World Tour, arriving barely two hours before the concert at the La Rosaleda football stadium after suffering an eye injury while enjoying water sports the day before in Ibiza. Grace Jones kept the punters entertained as one of the support acts. The deal with Michael required him to donate a guitar to the organisers (Málaga City Hall through its Serenatas de la Luna Joven summer concert programme) and he signed his name in gold lettering on an old Gretsch model. Following his death a week ago, it was revealed that the guitar was gathering dust in a nondescript display cabinet in a corner of the town hall’s youth department. Obviously now it will be attracting more attention! Also performing that summer in Málaga were Duran Duran and Paul Simon, the latter one week after George Michael as part of his own Graceland Tour. Later, Simon and his musicians set up an improvised flamenco stage behind the main concert stage, where he was photographed with other guests including his ex-wife Carrie Fisher. They had been divorced for five years at the time but were reportedly dating on and off, and spent several days holidaying together on the Coast after the concert. According to the Diario Sur newspaper, people who shared party moments with them during that visit noted that Carrie Fisher was discreet and always dressed in informal summer style – “a Princess Leia in flip-flops” (in allusion to her famous Star Wars role). Meanwhile, Antonio Banderas has been enjoying a Christmas break back home in Málaga, where he took the opportunity of checking out the art collection at the newly inaugurated Museo de Málaga. Later, on his Facebook page, he wrote, “Every time I come to you I feel like sharing culture. Inspiring visit to the new Museo de Málaga, custodian of extraordinary art you can’t miss.” On the professional front, it has just been announced that Banderas, who owns a penthouse apartment in the city and a villa on the outskirts of Marbella town centre, will be playing the role of Gianni Versace in a biopic to be directed by Denmark’s Bille August. Banderas, who has most recently been in Rome filming a movie on the life of Andrea Bocelli, “The Music of Silence”, is studying fashion design in London during his free moments, and this past summer released his own line of clothing for Selected Homme, and inaugurated the brand’s new boutique in Puerto Banús. On a less glamorous but important local note, a key stage of the coastal walkway (Senda Litoral) being constructed from Nerja in the east to Manilva in the west has just been completed. A wooden bridge over Manilva river now means the neighbouring municipalities of Casares and Manilva are linked by their promenades. Work is also currently underway on “Kilometre 0” of the entire walkway, on the cliff tops of Punta Chullera, in Manilva near the border between Málaga and Cádiz province. We stay in this area for our final featured home of the year, an attractive colonial-style villa in the highly sought-after La Paloma de Manilva area (priced at €1,190,000).
