Costa del Sol, Golfers’ Paradise

View of north Africa from Costa del Sol golf courseIn 1997 the Costa del Sol became one of the most talked about locations on the golfing calendar when Valderrama hosted the world famous Ryder Cup. Road signs up and down the coast were changed to read Costa del Golf and spectators arrived in their droves to cheer on the European team, led to victory by captain and local hero, Seve Ballesteros. Nowadays, there are so many high quality golf courses in the region that you could choose to play a different 18 holes each week of the year, with plenty left over for the next year. Valderrama remains one of the most revered, regularly hosting the World Golf Championships and Volvo Masters. It appeals to golfers of all levels, welcoming visitors between midday and 4pm with handicaps of 24 (32 for women) or better, and charging green fees between €250 and €300. The Marbella Club Golf Resort is another exclusive course, which prides itself on limiting the number of players at any given time to maintain a peaceful, unhurried and tranquil environment for the benefit of its members and visitors. Guests of the Marbella Club can leave their car at the hotel and be shuttle driven to the first tee, and then enjoy a couple of drinks in the clubhouse before being safely delivered back to Marbella centre. Golf on the costa del SolThose living within the gates of La Zagaleta urbanisation have two beautiful courses to choose between. The main course was designed by American golf architect Bradford Benz whose plans ensured that the Benahavis landscape, flora and fauna were preserved while also creating 18 multi level holes so each player can choose if he wants to be challenged or prefers an easy game on a particular day. Zagaleta’s Los Barrancos par 70 course opened in 2005 and weaves through the northern part of the country club via lakes, valleys, forests and streams. The fairways aim to provide players with different play options and incorporate natural hazards instead of traditional bunkers. Nueva Andalucia’s Golf Valley is home to several exciting courses each with their own friendly clubhouse and restaurant. Real Club de Golf Las Brisas prides itself on welcoming 1,350 members representing over 30 different nationalities to its 18-hole course, which was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones upon the request of founder José Banús. The club has just completed a huge renovation of the back nine holes in conjunction with Kyle Phillips Design to further challenge regular visitors. Santa Maria Golf is one of the most established clubs in east Marbella, located in the popular area of Elviria. From many of its 18 holes, players can admire views of the sea and the mountain range behind before relaxing in the 19th Century cortijo style clubhouse with its extensive facilities including tennis, bowling and a superb restaurant. ...and, of course, if you are looking for the perfect golf property contact Villa Marbella Now, as we specialise in frontline golf villas, townhouses and apartments...
