Coast on the Move… and Festival Honour for Banderas

A good sign that an area’s economy is in healthy shape is when global investors start paying attention and put their money where their expert business instincts are. That in turn encourages local authorities to loosen their budgetary strings, and the flow-on effects start to multiple and give us all some joy. The Costa del Sol is a classic case in point. In recent months, the Coast has re-established itself as one of Europe’s prime investment destinations, especially when it comes to the property market, and this has been accompanied by a series of announcements presenting a diverse array of projects. Some of the highlights… - Madrid real estate group Tremón is planning to modernise the iconic Tivoli amusement park in Benalmádena and expand its surroundings with a multi-million-euro commercial and leisure area. The project would transform the Arroyo de la Miel area where the park is located, including a hypermarket, green zone, underground parking for 2,000 cars, cinema theatres, office buildings, an auditorium and a hotel, as well as major upgrade of Tivoli’s current attractions. - International Japanese cuisine maestro Nobuyuki Matsuhisa has 34 restaurants around the world – and now he will be adding one in Marbella to his culinary empire. The first Nobu establishment in Spain is due to open in May at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa on Marbella’s Golden Mile, home to Dani García’s eponymous Michelin-star restaurant. According to Puente Romano, Matsuhisa also plans to open a boutique hotel in the same complex this summer, starting off with 25 high-end suites. - Mijas Town Hall has initiated the formal process to develop a parkland which, at 450,000 to 500,000 square metres, would be the largest of its kind in Málaga province. The total investment is expected to be more than €5 million and the council is hoping the project will be completed before the end of 2018. Featuring a traditional Andalucian architectural style, it will comprise expansive garden and forest areas, a running track, a cycling and skating lane, a climbing wall, fountains, kiosks, a pavilion, a lake for boating (with a bridge for taking picturesque snapshots), a children’s area and water activities during summer. - Marbella Town Hall is creating an expansive pedestrian-only plaza in the commercial and interior areas of the Puerto Deportivo, with other key parts of the marina also to be improved and upgraded. - The town hall has initiated a series of projects in San Pedro Alcántara, costing over €2 million, to enhance the area around the boulevard. The work includes eliminating above-ground parking, boosting pedestrian-only areas and improving the south-facing visual aesthetic of this flagship part of the town. - Estepona’s flourishing reputation as “the garden of the Costa del Sol” will be further enhanced in 2017, with plans to develop a 3,270 square metre green area in the northern part of the town, including a sports track and “bio-healthy” circuit. - Since its golden years in the 1990s when it was considered one of Europe’s premier marinas, Benalmádena Port has suffered a series of setbacks that have diminished its status. That all now seems to be behind it, however, with an end-of-year report noting that several new retail outlets have opened and the number of boats using the port’s facilities totalled more than 1,000 in 2016. And Antonio Banderas? Next Saturday, the Málaga-born actor will be in town to accept the prestigious “Biznaga de Oro” award at the closing gala of this year’s Málaga Film Festival (which starts tonight, Friday) in honour of his celebrated career. Meanwhile, our featured home this week is located in an appropriately verdant part of Estepona – and priced at an excellent €1,650,000.
