A Century of Potent History

[caption id="attachment_2233" align="alignright" width="300"] BMW Concept Roadster[/caption] More than 1,000 exhibitors from throughout the world have been roaring into action this week at the pacesetting EICMA show in Milan. Considered the world’s premier exhibition of motorcycles and scooters, this year’s event (which continues until Sunday the 9th) is celebrating its centenary. Extending over 280,000 square metres of exhibition area, and showcasing 1,053 brands from 34 countries, the 2014 show comprises several themes areas, including “The Green Planet”, dedicated to sustainable mobility where the protagonist is the “electric world”, and “EICMA Custom” a world of artistic masterpieces and fine craftsmanship in a “rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere”. According to figures released by the organisers, in Europe there are approximately 32 million motorbikes and mopeds, including 8.6 million in Italy alone. With many enthusiasts travelling from Spain for the exhibition – and the Costa del Sol and its surrounding areas providing riders with one of Europe’s most stunning and diverse motorbike settings – we take a look at three top brands that are guaranteed to raise adrenaline levels for their owners… and dazzle onlookers. [caption id="attachment_2239" align="alignright" width="300"] Valentino Rossi and Yamaha Supersport[/caption] BMW Concept Roadster: Following the presentation of the Concept Ninety in 2013 to mark the company’s 90th anniversary, in 2014 BMW Motorrad unveiled the Concept Roadster. A typical BMW roadster with a powerful two-cylinder boxer engine, single-sided swing arm with cardan drive and light tubular space frame, the roadster interprets these classic elements in a state-of-the-art, dynamic form – exciting both to ride and to look at. Promising impressive performance and supreme power delivery across the entire engine speed range, in its latest generation it generates 92 kW (125 bhp) at 7,750 rpm from 1,170 cc with a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Yamaha Supersport: Former world MotoGP champions Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were on hand at the EICMA to present the new flagship YZF-R1 and high-end YZF-R1M supersport motorbikes, both featuring an entirely new 998 cubic-centimetre liquid-cooled, in-line four-cylinder engine with a crossplane crankshaft. The bikes are based on Yamaha’s "High Tech Armed Pure Sport" concept of an all-out supersport model fully armed with advanced technology. Designed to be “the fastest machines on the circuit”, they allow riders to experience first-hand the technical philosophy behind Yamaha’s MotoGP racing machine, the YZR-M1. Generating an impressive 200hp, they are the world’s first two commercial motorcycles with a six-axis position sensor that detects three-axis angular velocity and three-axis acceleration. The two models will be released in Europe in early March 2015. [caption id="attachment_2241" align="alignright" width="300"] Ducati 1299 Panigale superbike[/caption] Ducati Superbike: On the eve of the EICMA, Ducati used a live streaming feed to present the latest “dream” models in their 2015 range. These include the 1299 Panigale which, with its 1285 cubic-centimetre Superquadro engine, torque of 144.6 Nm at 8,750 rpm, dry weight of 166.5 kilograms, maximum power of 205 hp at 10,500 rpm and record-breaking power-to-weight ratio, sets a high benchmark for ultra-performance bikes. The new electronic package, specifically designed for the 1299 Panigale and incorporated in the three different riding modes, boosts performance even higher. The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides riders with Cornering ABS, together with Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and, on the S version, the Öhlins Smart EC, an event-based suspension control system. The 1299 Panigale also features, for the first time on a road-legal Ducati Superbike, the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), now usable for down-changing as well. This modern, slightly eccentric mansion in Elviria (at the eastern end of Marbella municipality) comprises three interleaved cubes, with the inner construction extending over three levels that are connected via free floating stairs. There is underground parking for six cars – or several motorbikes! Click here to see more.
