Winter weekend getaways on the Costa del Sol
Now that the weather is a little cooler it’s an ideal time to jump in the car and disappear on an adventure to somewhere exciting for the weekend. Luckily for those living on the
Costa del Sol we are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a weekend retreat. What’s more, as we are now out of season, renting a room or a little chalet tends to be cheaper in comparison with the summer months. With that in mind, one popular destination that’s cosy at this time of year is the small village of
El Chorro, near the town of
Álora.
Here you can hire a cottage, fill up with food and drink supplies for a couple of nights and treat yourself to a roaring fire in the peaceful countryside. Surrounded by huge lakes, pine forests and the famous Caminito del Rey (King’s pathway), this area is popular with walkers and is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the
Costa del Sol.
On the other hand you might want to visit the small picture postcard town of
Tarifa on the
Costa de la Luz. Boasting an endearing old quarter, there are breathtaking views of Morocco and numerous virgin beaches, Roman ruins and inviting taverns to keep you entertained.
Further a field you could take a drive to the historic city of
Granada at the foot of the
Sierra Nevada mountain range. This exotic site makes for a great getaway thanks to its rich heritage, monuments and brooding mountain range that keeps an ever-watchful eye over the city. It’s worth taking a stroll around the atmospheric Albaicín, a neighbourhood that retains the narrow winding streets of its Medieval Moorish past, or the magnificent Alhambra Palace, Spain’s most popular tourist attraction, which along with the Albaicín was declared a world heritage site in 1984. Or simply explore the traditional bars, where tapas continue to be served free with your drinks.
So get the maps out, fill the car boot with supplies and start planning your weekend escapade!
