“Veroño”… Hard To Find Better Autumn Weather
It’s a seasonal phenomenon almost peculiar to the Costa del Sol. And happily so for those of us living or holidaying here… Residents and regular visitors will be aware that October is, arguably, the most pleasant month of the year in southern Spain, partly because it doesn’t seem like autumn at all. Summer is officially over, life is back to its comfortingly familiar routine, and right now we are enjoying that popular Spanish invention, the “puente, or extra long weekend, facilitated by a public holiday on a Thursday (or Tuesday on other occasions).
Second homeowners and holidaymakers, meanwhile, will find vast stretches of uncrowded beaches and promenades, and restaurants with ample free tables available for a relaxing, tranquil meal – while still offering a sublimely “summery” ambience.
Of course, all of this would not be at all appealing if it wasn’t accompanied by good weather. Certainly not an issue on the Costa del Sol, however. Out of curiosity (okay, also for bragging rights) we checked out the current weather in other northern climes around noon:
London, 10º and overcast; Dublin, 9º and cloudy; Berlin, 15º and overcast; Amsterdam, 13º and overcast; Paris, 14º and overcast; Stockholm, 12º and cloudy; Copenhagen, 13º and overcast; Helsinki, 4º and light rain; Oslo, 8º and raining. You get the picture: days with a chilly nip in the air, before temperatures plummet even further at night – and drizzle.
So back to the Coast, and our point of reference for mid-October weather: Marbella – 28º and clear blue skies in the midst of the “puente”, with an evening minimum of 20º.
According to a report in the Sur daily newspaper, current temperatures are actually higher than what they were at the start of the month, as summer effectively extends into autumn to create a sub-season denominated “veroño” – a combination of “verano” (summer) and “otoño” (autumn). The hottest day on record this month was 22 October 2014, when the temperature gauge soared to 36.3 (a “terral”, or “land wind”, was blowing).

This phenomenal autumn weather is also one of the main reasons why next week the Costa del Sol is hosting the only European Tour golf tournament in Spain this year. The Andalucía Valderrama Masters will, in fact, be the last 2017 event on European soil before the Tour moves on to its international end-of-season swing through China, Turkey, South Africa and Dubai.
As the reigning U.S. Masters champion, winner of the last Andalucía Masters held at Sotogrande’s celebrated Royal Valderrama Club (in 2011) and tournament co-host, Sergio García will be the main drawcard from 19 to 22 October, but he will also be sharing the spotlight with the sensational new star of Spanish golf, Jon Rahm – with due respect to the numerous other Tour champions present, including Grand Slam winners Padraig Harrington and José María Olazábal (the latter now mostly playing on the U.S. Champions senior tour).
A winner on both the U.S. PGA Tour and European Tour in this his rookie season, the 22-year-old from Barrika (Basque Country) has risen to fifth in the world rankings as he prepares for what will be his first tournament in Spain as a professional.
He first visited Valderrama during the 2007 Volvo Masters and recalls getting his shirt autographed by several players. Ten years later, he will be the one signing autographs. “The boy that went to Valderrama in 2007 is still there,” he says, “with the same dreams and the same ambition. I am extremely fortunate that my dreams are coming true, but this year feels more like a Steven Spielberg film – winning at Torrey Pines and again in Ireland the way I did doesn’t even happen in the wildest dreams.”
