The Bugatti Legend Continues
On the eve of this year’s Paris Motor Show, Bugatti celebrated the European premiere of the sixth and final model of its “Les Legendes” limited edition series. Previously unveiled at the Monterey Car Week in California, the super sports car manufacturer’s latest model is dedicated to brand founder and patron Ettore Bugatti.
The presentation marked the successful completion of its Legends Edition. Only three vehicles per model will be built, and all 18 vehicles were sold out even before the “Ettore” was displayed. The aim of the Legends edition is to honour important personalities and cars in the company’s history. One year ago, Bugatti presented the “Jean-Pierre Wimille” model in California to inaugurate the series, followed by the “Jean Bugatti” at the IAA in Frankfurt and the “Meo Costantini“ at the Dubai Motorshow. This year the series continued with the world première of the “Rembrandt Bugatti” at the Automobile Salon in Geneva and the “Black Bess” at Auto China in Peking.
“The edition shows that history can be authentically clothed in contemporary design,” said Bugatti president Wolfgang Dürheimer, “In addition, we have the technical excellence and luxurious comfort of a modern Bugatti. The Bugatti Legends have already proven to be highly-valued collectors’ items.”
The Ettore is based on the historic Bugatti Type 41 Royale. Costing €2.35 million net, it honours the company founder’s belief that an automobile should be a “perfect harmony of technology and aesthetics” – striving for a total work of art”. The brand’s values of “art, form, technique” define this unique approach, according to Dürheimer. “Under his leadership, vehicles were produced that were ahead of their times both technically and stylistically. Two such vehicles are the Type 57 SC Atlantic and the unforgettable Type 41 Royale that Ettore Bugatti built as the most powerful and luxurious car of its time. It also serves as the historical basis for this Bugatti Legend.
“The lightweight construction designs of the 1920s, such as the Type 13 “Brescia” or the Type 35 – which was one of the most successful racing cars in motor sport history, with 2,000 victories and podium finishes – are further notable representatives of the brand.”
All the Legends models are based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. The Ettore is powered by a 1,200 PS, 8-litre W16 engine that transmits 1,500 Nm at 3,000 to 5,000 rpm to the tarmac and propels it from zero to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h with the roof down, the Vitesse is said to be “the world’s fastest production roadster ever built”.
The design of the Ettore carbon body is based on a 1932 Type 41 Royale with the chassis number 41111 and it features a “yin-yang” colour split. The front part is made of hand-polished aluminium and finished with a clear coating, and Bugatti is also using two types of leather for the first time. Traditional calf’s leather – in a natural brown (Brun Cavalier) – is used throughout the vehicle interior, and the parts that are typically touched by hand are all jacketed in an exclusive, natural cordovan leather. The tanning process alone for this skilfully created leather takes around six months.
The vehicle’s rear, sill panels and A-pillar trims are finished with dark-blue exposed carbon, while the exterior’s blue exposed carbon is present again in the vehicle interior, including the door trims and cover of the rear centre box, complemented by the seats’ dark-blue seams.
One particularly eye-catching feature of the interior is the platinum-coated dancing elephant, inset in the cover of the rear centre box, reminiscent of the hood ornament of the Type 41 Royale. The figure was originally sculpted by Ettore’s brother Rembrandt.

Overall, the Veyron model is also on the finishing straight. The model is limited to 450 units in total – 300 coupés already sold out, and 150 roadsters – and fewer than 20 cars are now available to clients. For those able to snap up one of these rare super cars, or who are already one of the even more elite “Legendes” connoisseurs, the next step is to buy a grand home to house their stunning new purchase – like this contemporary-style villa in La Zagaleta.
