Starlite Marbella, Status Quo… and Antonio Banderas
It’s been a while since we checked out what Málaga’s favourite son, Antonio Banderas, has been up to. After a fairly frenetic six months, slipping in and out of his various roles as an actor, producer, fashion designer, penthouse apartment owner in Málaga city and inveterate swashbuckler, the 55-year-old is currently in Algarrobo filming Salty. Not the agriculture-rich municipality of Algarrobo here in the eastern part of the Costa del Sol – but Algarrobo 10,000 kilometres away on the Pacific coast in Chile.
Also starring Olga Kurylenko (who first gained fame as a “Bond girl” in Quantum of Silence) and Mark Valley, Salty is an action-comedy directed by Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider, The Expendables 2) in which the Málaga-born actor plays an ageing rock star and reformed sex addict married to a supermodel who is abducted by pirates. It is billed as "The Hangover-meets-Spinal Tap" and is adapted from the novel by Mark Haskell Smith.
A bassist for a recently split mega-platinum band, Turk Henry takes his pampered wife on an exotic luxury holiday to Chile where she is snatched by a group of renegade buccaneers trying to raise money to buy a boat. He has never organised “anything more challenging than a club sandwich from room service”, but Turk embarks on a rescue mission though the back alleys of Santiago and jungles of South America.
"Finally three of my passions together — cinema, music and humour," Banderas told The Hollywood Reporter. Salty is the first major Hollywood film to be backed financially by equity crowdfunding. More than 120 investors pledged £1.9 million capital towards the project in exchange for 25 per cent of the film's profits. The movie also raised £10 million from other sources.
Back in Marbella, Selected this week officially inaugurated its first Marbella boutique in Puerto Banús, where a special Selected Homme collection designed by Banderas – who last year completed a fashion design course at the Central Saint Martins academy in London – will be on sale. The range is said to be focused on “more cosmopolitan and elegant males looking for a special outfit for every occasion. From denim trousers to suits, all tailored to the highest quality, Banderas has designed a variety of garments alongside the company’s team, to serve every moment within a man’s life.”
Banderas is due to be back on the Coast this summer as co-host of the annual Starlite charity gala. Meanwhile, the latest band to be confirmed for the Starlite Marbella festival – which starts next week on 14 July and continues until 20 August – is Status Quo (19 August). Other performers signed up for the fifth edition of the festival include Robert Plant and his new band, The Sensational Space Shifters (16 July), Carlos Santana (24 July), Charles Aznavour (29 July), Tom Jones (1 August) and The Corrs (16 August).
