Lustrous launch of Marbella Luxury Weekend
Marbella is currently a global focal point of luxury as the world’s most select brands are showcased in the sumptuous setting of Puerto Banús amidst a chic soirée of beautiful people. Comprising nearly 100 events by participating companies over four days (until Sunday 8 June), the fourth edition of Marbella Luxury Weekend focuses on fashion, jewellery, sports cars and haute cuisine in the Port’s ultra-select surroundings.
The lavish festivities began on Thursday night with a grand opening party in the VIP Torre and VIP Levante areas. Marbella mayoress Ángeles Muñoz and town hall tourism councillor José Luis Hernández expressed their appreciation to the companies and brands involved in MLW’14 and stressed the importance of this “essential event for the Costa del Sol”. According to Muñoz, the event’s main objective is “to make the world see the quality and brand strength of Marbella… the quality of the events is increasing year after year, remaining unique and innovative.”

One of the highlights for 2014, unveiled during the opening night celebrations, was a floating catwalk sponsored by Club del Mar Plaza Beach and featuring Wolford, Swarovski and Sena Design – with pieces ranging from ethnic look to seventies style, and minimalist inspiration to art deco. Wolford’s collection combined elegance and femininity, complemented by Swarovski accessories inspired this season by tribal-glam; and Sena Design’s stylish and sophisticated silks were brimming with vibrant colours.
Throughout the evening guests were able to savour delicacies prepared by two-star Michelin chef Dani García’s catering company, while also being reminded that the event has an important philanthropic element, with the SOS Foundation organising a raffle for “Solidarity Treasures” and, at Sunday’s closing party, an auction in the VIP Torre area including products from leading luxury firms. Thirty per cent of the raffle proceeds will go to families in Marbella, with the remainder divided among families in need throughout Spain.
During the official presentation of the event in May, the mayoress noted that data provided by the Spanish Luxury Association had ranked Marbella as the second biggest city in Spain in terms of volume and movement of luxury shopping, behind Barcelona. "This is a huge flow of tourists as well as an increase in employment in this sector, and all tourism-related activities."
More than 70 companies are presenting their exclusive brands during this year’s Marbella Luxury Weekend, including supercar models Porsche and Pagani.
One of the more business-orientated highlights of MLW’14 is the Zagaleta Group’s third annual "Brands and Trends" forum, an initiative that brings together leading executives from major global sectors for a series of presentations and panel discussions, analysing innovation, art, luxury, technology, social responsibility and new markets. According to Ignacio Perez, director of business development at La Zagaleta, “Our purpose is to learn to achieve excellence and share knowledge. All the attendees will benefit from an enriching multi vision."

Excellence, of course, is one of the hallmarks of the La Zagaleta residential development in the mountains above Marbella, as amply demonstrated by this stunning Andalucian-style villa. Comprising seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, with a cinema, spa, bar and wine bodega, as well as staff quarters, the property is built on an elevated plot that wonderfully accentuates Italian-style landscaped gardens and includes a beach entry swimming pool with a pavilion for outside dining.
