Opera, ballet and concerts at the Cervantes Theatre

Teatro Cervantes MalagaAnyone planning a trip to Málaga this festive season to see its famous Christmas tree, lights, decorations and market would be wise to add the Teatro Cervantes to their itinerary. This popular theatre is conveniently located in the city centre, near the Plaza de la Merced, and is within walking distance of Málaga institutions such as tapas bar El Pimpi, the cathedral and the Roman theatre. It was originally built in 1870 to replace the city’s Teatro de la Libertad, which was destroyed by a huge fire that left the city’s lovers of culture in desperate need of a replacement. Later, during the Civil War, the theatre fell into a state of disrepair and much of the original building was lost. Until 1984 that is, when the government restored it to its former glory after a considerable amount of investment. Since Queen Sofía officially reopened the theatre in 1987, it has gone from strength to strength and is now at the epicentre of all things cultural in the city. But the Cervantes isn’t only about ballet, theatre and classical music. Over the past few years it has also hosted concerts by the likes of Art Garfunkel, Suzanne Vega, Mark Knopfler, James Blunt, Paul Weller, Jerry Lee Lewis, B B King and Van Morrison. BalletThe theatre is especially popular at Christmas, when it hosts classic productions including El Cascanueces (The Nutcracker) and concerts by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra. Boasting a 1,171 seat capacity, the Cervantes also stages dramas, comedies, ballets, jazz concerts, flamenco, musicals and galas - as well as operas such as Guillermo Tell (William Tell) and Il Trovatore. Other highly rated events held here are the annual Jazz Festival in November and the Málaga Festival de Cine (Málaga Film Festival) in April, should you be in town. This coming month the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia and the Choir, Ballet and Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Russian Army will be performing, so make sure you don’t miss out.
