High Rating for Women’s Well-Being, Peace and Security in Spain

Concerned about disturbing recent revelations in the entertainment industry, and women’s status in general, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Peace Research Institute of Oslo launched the global Women, Peace and Security Index. According to Jeni Klugman, managing director of the Georgetown Institute and a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government’s Women in Public Policy Program at Harvard University, the index “measures women’s well-being by assessing their inclusion, justice and security” and “is designed to inform and inspire action by governments, multilateral agencies, development partners, civil society and business”. Iceland leads the way among the 153 countries surveyed, followed by Norway, Switzerland and Slovenia – with Spain highly rated at an impressive fifth. The top-10 is completed by Finland, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium. Just one more reason why Spain is at or near the top of so many people’s wish-list when it comes to settling in a new country or buying a second home for regular holidays. Here are some other reasons from our own “Good News Index”… - DBK Informa predict that housing starts in Spain will be close to 75,000 at the end of 2017, a 15 per cent rise on last year. In their latest industry sector report, the consultants say they expect the Spanish property market’s upward trend to continue in the short term, prompted by the “positive” economic situation. - Spanish Property Insights’ authoritative monthly House Price Index Tracker, which “plots the progress of the six most-watched house price indices in Spain, and brings them together in one chart”, reports the following increases based on latest available figures: Association of Spanish Notaries index +0.3% in August Tinsa index based on valuations by the company +3.2% in September Idealista asking price index +3.2% in October Explaining the variations, SPI’s Mark Stücklin notes, “The national indices don’t tell us anything about prices in local markets, but they do at least give us an idea of where we are in the property market cycle. Whereas a few years ago they were all in negative territory, they are now broadly in positive territory, suggesting that the years of price adjustment are behind us. If the current cycle performs like the past, we can expect several years of rising Spanish property prices ahead of us.” - BBVA Research has raised its forecast for real estate investment growth in 2017 by 1.7 percentage points to 8.2 per cent, encouraged that the market “continues to demonstrate a positive trend”, which manifests itself in a “good mood” when it comes to demand and price increases. Its estimate for 2018 is 5.9 per cent – revised half a point down due to uncertainty over economic policy. In its “Spanish Situation” report, the bank’s research department also forecasts 4.5 and 3.8 per cent boosts in construction in 2017 and 2018, respectively. BBVA Research further highlights “growing dynamism” in land sales which, it believes, will presumably lead to new developments being initiated over the next few quarters.
