Coast to Coast for a Showcase of Elegance

Mercedes Streamliner at Concours d’Elegance[/caption]
As those of us relaxing in southern Spain indulge in more leisurely summer pursuits by the sea or on an al fresco restaurant terrace, the pace and decibels are being raised to a crescendo this weekend on another famous coastline, with the celebration of one of international motoring’s most eagerly awaited events.
Originally a minor social event combined with a road race through the pine and cypress forests of California’s central Pacific coastal area, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has grown into, arguably, the world’s top-ranking collector car competition. As its name implies the Concours is a contest of elegance, not speed. Automobiles and motorcycles are judged for their historical accuracy, technical merit and style.

McLaren 650S Spider[/caption]
On Sunday 17 August, 200 of the most prized collector cars and motorcycles in the world will roll onto the fairway of one of golf’s most renowned and finest finishing holes, the 18th at Pebble Beach Golf Links – where “tyre meets turf and transformation occurs”.
To provide a little taste of what motoring enthusiasts will be enjoying this weekend in California, here we feature four of the exquisite models on show…
540 K Streamliner: Mercedes-Benz Classic is showcasing the 540 K Streamliner at this year's Concours d’Elegance, following extensive restoration and reconstruction. Described as representing “the embodiment of perfection in its purest form", the vehicle was built with a powerful supercharged engine for high-speed, long distance motoring. It was originally designed to take part in the Berlin-Rome race, planned for the autumn of 1938 and initially postponed until 1939 before being ultimately cancelled completely due to the outbreak of World War II. From mid-1938 onwards, the streamlined model was used by the German branch of tyre manufacturer Dunlop for everyday testing of high-speed tyres for fast cars, before being mothballed after the war – until now.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage[/caption]
MSO 650S Spider: Three years after its launch at the Concours d’Elegance, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) returns with a unique example of the recently launched MSO 650S Spider. The model is based on the equally exclusive MSO 650S, which made its debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and is one of just 50 examples with unique styling upgrades, including extensive satin-finished carbon fibre. The exterior has been finished in Cerulean Blue, a bright and eye-catching paint designed by MSO.
Bespoke Q: Four bespoke commissions created by the Q by Aston Martin division are on show in Pebble Beach, including the V12 Vantage S. With its rich purple amethyst exterior paint punctuated with bright painted Monterey Pearl front grille and rear diffuser, the special V12 Vantage S Coupé adopts a unique example of the colour and trim freedom offered through the Q service. Also included are a series of special carbon fibre details such as rotary controls which are each hand-wound from a single filament of carbon fibre.

Bentley Continental GT3-R[/caption]
Continental GT3-R: The most dynamic and fastest-accelerating Bentley built to date, the two-seater Continental GT3-R, powered by Bentley’s race and road proven 4.0 litre V8 engine, is making its North American debut at Pebble Beach. All 300 Continental GT3-R models take design inspiration from the GT3 racer and will feature a Glacier White exterior, while additional unique exterior features adding to the sporting design include gloss black headlamp bezels, matrix grille, window surrounds and bumper strips.

Sweeping views... and parking/garage space[/caption]
For those sufficiently fascinated by the cars on show at Pebble Beach to want to expand their own collection back on the Costa del Sol, a new expanded home base may also be required – like, for example, this magnificent estate in El Madroñal. Situated in a gated community in Benahavís municipality, the five-bedroom villa (and separate guest house with three bedrooms) is accessed via an electric gate opening onto a sweeping driveway that leads to a large garage with capacity for as many as five cars – with room to park several more outside.
