Award-Winning Hospital Care on the Costa del Sol
A colleague’s elderly friend was visiting from the U.K. when he fell down the stairs of his family’s rented apartment and had to be rushed to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. He subsequently learned he had broken his hip and faced a lengthy hospital stay while the medical staff prepared him for an operation and the extended post-op convalescence.
Eventually back with his family, he was effusive in his praise of the treatment and service. The initial ambulance had responded rapidly, with three people on hand to move him from the apartment; the hospital team meticulously took every precaution to ensure her was ready for the operation (in his eighties, he was already taking several different medications for other conditions, which had to be taken into consideration); and the operation proceeded smoothly.
Before going into the operating theatre he was further comforted by his doctor’s comment that the hospital’s medical team were especially well prepared for hip operations as, apparently, many other visiting foreigners have suffered similar falls and required emergency treatment and operative care.
The Costa del Sol Hospital is, in fact, rated highly throughout Spain, not only for specialist hip treatments. This autumn it was named top hospital in the prestigious 12th annual “Best in Class” awards, beating 134 other hospitals in Spain’s 17 regions to the accolade.
In addition to excellent health services on the Costa del Sol, residents and visitors can also take advantage of one of Europe’s most well-serviced international airports.
- The latest report from Eurostat shows that, of the European Union’s 30 main airports, Málaga-Costa del Sol experienced the second highest level of growth in 2016 (15.7 per cent) behind Luton near London (19.4 per cent). At the end of September 2017, the number of passengers using Málaga’s international airport had increased by 12.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.
- While also advising caution, as other Mediterranean countries and areas re-strengthen their tourist promotional initiatives, Elías Bendodo, president of the Diputación Provincial (Málaga provincial government), said a record three million British travellers would have passed through Ms airoirt by the end of the year, ish travellers would have passed through M."the Costa del Sol); while Andalucian minister for álaga’s airport by the end of the year.
- Málaga’s airport began the winter season with direct flights offered to 109 destinations around the world, nine more than last year. For Europe, 27,144 flights offering 4,818,434 seats are scheduled for this period, rises of 5.3 and five per cent, respectively, compared with the same period in 20016-2017. The number of flights programmed until the end of March within Spain (8,666 in total) is also 18.6 per cent higher, and there are 17.9 per cent more seats available (1,162,166).
