World Peace, Tourism… and Gourmet Marbella
It is sometimes difficult to fully appreciate the United Nation’s reasoning when the organisation announces its annual schedule of “International Days”. They can tend to include both the quirky and the somewhat obscure. At the moment, however, we are in the midst of a week when two eminently worthy initiatives have been commemorated.
Last Wednesday (21 September) was International Day of Peace, “devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples”. Commenting on this year’s theme of “Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said, “"Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind." Admirable sentiments.
Similarly for World Tourism Day, which is next Tuesday (27th), and whose theme is "Tourism for All – Promoting Universal Accessibility". According to the UN, the aim is to “create environments that can cater for the needs of all of us, whether we are travelling or staying at home… May that be due to a disability, even temporary, families with small children, or the ageing population… Which is why we want to call upon the right for all of the world’s citizens to experience the incredible diversity of our planet and the beauty of the world we live in.”
The Costa del Sol will, as always, be on centre-stage during the World Tourism Day celebrations, as both a global tourism hotspot for holidaymakers and a premier destination for “residential-tourists”, who opt for this magnificent part of southern Europe to establish a second home or even to settle permanently.
The reasons for the Coast’s popularity are numerous, as documented recently by the UK’s authoritative Daily Telegraph, which joined a growing list of international publications this year lauding the attractions of Spain as a holiday destination, especially as travellers become concerned about safety in other areas.
The daily newspaper highlighted 19 reasons why holidaymakers should consider Spain for their next trip away, including (specific to the Costa del Sol):
Sun, sun and sun – of course!
Enviable cities – among them Málaga.
Cultural giants – Pablo Picasso and the 300 works on show at his eponymous Málaga museum (“not too shabby”).
The best beaches in Europe.
Only a few hours away – and airfares are usually cheap.
Still good value – “Spain remains one of the best-value destinations in Europe for a summer getaway, with the Costa del Sol… commended earlier this year by the Post Office for low in-resort prices.”
Spanish surf – “The Iberian coastline’s Atlantic face combines river mouths, hidden coves and wide sandy beaches, providing plenty of variety for holiday surfers.”
The food – “You could spend a very happy holiday indeed exploring the regions where your favourite foods and wines are produced.”
In further reference to the latter, in Marbella the group planning to establish a gourmet market in Marbella, Grupo Alfil, has released details of the winning design for the “Abastos & Viandas” (“Food & Groceries”) project. Fajardo +T10 Arquitectos beat 18 other proposals judged by a panel including top chef Dani García. The €500,000 market, located in a 470 square metre space on the lower floor of Edificio Alfil in the town centre, and comprising a provisional 15 culinary stalls, is due to open at the end of November.
