Wellness Kitchens… and the Mediterranean Diet
Whether you have settled permanently on the Costa del Sol or are a regular visitor, dining well – and healthily – is one of the area’s great attractions. The Coast is one of the world’s key culinary havens for enjoying the benefits of the renowned Mediterranean diet.
For its annual list of the best diets, US News & World Report ranked 40 eating plans based on criteria including how easy the diet is to follow, its effects on weight loss (both short- and long-term), how nutritional and safe the diet is, and how well it helps prevent diabetes and heart disease. “If you're trying to prioritise healthy eating habits in 2018,” noted the report’s authors, “remember that not all diets are created equal. Often, the ones that garner the most attention aren't the best.”
The ranking drew on the expertise of a panel of dieticians and nutritionists, who were asked to name their top 10. Actually 11 in the end because, even though for the eighth year in a row the DASH diet was named the best, this year it was in a tie with the Mediterranean diet.
According to US News & World Report, “The Mediterranean diet is typically high in fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains like whole wheat and brown rice. Studies have linked the diet with a number of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease and breast cancer. Some research has suggested the diet could also have potential memory-related benefits.” US News & World Report named the plan the best plant-based diet of the 40 considered, and it was deemed the easiest to follow.
Meanwhile, in other news on the culinary front, each year, the Global Wellness Summit (GWS) identifies new trends that will have a meaningful impact on the $3.7 trillion wellness industry, and for 2018 they have highlighted the “Wellness Kitchen”.
In a report headed, “Kitchens catch up with healthy eating”, they noted, “While those pursuing healthy, fulfilling lives have always cared deeply about the source, preparation and sustainability of their food, only recently have many begun to ask: Why don’t we hold our kitchen to the same standards of wellness as the food we keep within it?
“After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home and should further our healthy lifestyle, not hinder it. Yet in many homes convenience continues to trump health, with kitchen pantries and cupboards better suited to storing canned goods and packaged foods than fresh fruits and vegetables.
“The Wellness Kitchen is a new trend poised to transform the most popular room in our home into a better reflection of ourselves. Instead of serving as a relic of the past, our kitchens will use advancements in technology and design to foster a healthier lifestyle for our bodies, our minds and our planet. Because just like the food it contains, the Wellness Kitchen doesn’t merely feed – it nourishes.”
Meanwhile, the Axarquía area at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol has also been in the spotlight recently with the formal presentation in Rome of the United Nations’ “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems” status for the muscatel grape. The aim of the GIAHS programme is to promote understanding and recognition of traditional agricultural systems.
