Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Marbella Centre

Marbella might not be the official capital of a Spanish province but in many ways the city punches well above its ostensibly middleweight status. When it comes to luxury, Marbella is unquestionably in the heavyweight division. This was confirmed in the most recent annual ranking compiled by Luxury Spain – an association whose members include 50 high-end brands. According to the association, Barcelona is the Spanish city with the highest volume of luxury product sales (39 per cent) but, for a second consecutive year, Marbella (22 per cent) topped third-placed Madrid (16 per cent), followed by Ibiza (10 per cent) and Mallorca (eight per cent). This, of course, will be of no surprise to the VIP guests attending this year’s Marbella Luxury Weekend, which continues until Sunday 7 June. An initiative of Marbella Town Hall, the event includes fashion shows, jewellery exhibitions, supercar presentations, a golf tournament at Marbella Club Golf Resort, glamorous soirées and business networking. The main Marbella Luxury Weekend events are held in Puerto Banús, but not all the attention is currently on the famous marina. Preparations are also well underway for the annual Marbella fair in honour of the city’s patron saint, San Bernabé, which begins on Monday and continues until 14 June. The official inauguration will be held on 8 June at 10 pm in the Parque Francisco Cuevas Blanco, where mayoress Ángeles Muñoz will formally switch on the dazzling fairground lights, Michelin-star chef Dani García will make the official proclamation (pregón), the fair queen and maids of honour will be crowned, and the evening events will culminate, and the fair proper begin, with a fireworks display on El Faro beach. Over the following eight days, the fairground will be the main focal point of the festivities by night but, during the day, many people will be enjoying the traditional attractions of the “day-time” fair in Marbella’s town centre, where the brightly-festooned streets will be filled with people wining, dining, dancing and generally having a good time – so much so, in the less hardy cases, that they will struggle to make it through it the evening revelry! For those who do, the tradition is to party through the night and return to the town centre for a breakfast of churros (fried dough confectionery) and hot chocolate. The fortunate ones who have managed to take the week off or are on holidays will be then be able to sleep for a few hours before the carousing resumes. The less fortunate, well… maybe strong coffee rather than hot chocolate before heading sheepishly into work. But we digress… This week we are checking out an area of Marbella that doesn’t always make a prominent appearance in real estate promotions and portfolios – tending to play second fiddle to other more exalted addresses such as Sierra Blanca, the Golden Mile, Nueva Andalucía, Los Monteros, Guadalmina and Puerto Banús – but which, in fact, is much more in tune with the lifestyle preferences of many homeowners and buyers. That is… Marbella town itself. Only 50 years ago, Marbella was essentially a farming and mining village but over the past four decades it has been transformed into major centre of contemporary, cosmopolitan living. Many people – especially locals and long-time residents (both Spanish and international) – have found their little corner of heaven in the Old Town, with its well-preserved old buildings and remains from the Visigoth, Vandal, Byzantine and Roman eras, as well as Moorish and Christian architectural influences. This is the soul of Marbella, but not necessarily to the taste of all people wanting to live in a town centre rather than the outskirts or satellite neighbourhoods. For them, another excellent option is one of the stunningly modern and luxurious apartment complexes that extend from the main centre all the way to the start of the Golden Mile, many overlooking the sea.
