The origins of Spain’s popularity as an international tourist destination are generally considered to date to the 1960s. General Franco was keen (or desperate) to attract revenue after years of buttoned-down dictatorship, and visitors from colder northern climes saw Spain – including the Costa del Sol – as an excellent option for their winter holidays. The year was 1946, when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe acquired the 120,000 square metre Finca Santa Margarita estate by the Mediterranean and converted it into his private residence.
Defining luxury as a “blend of privacy and gardens”, over the years his vision was transformed into a sumptuous meeting point for the wealthy and famous from around the world. His family residence became an exclusive 20-room club and, later, the Marbella Club Hotel Golf Resort & Spa – just a short walk from the property featured here.

Meanwhile, returning to the Marbella Club, the most recent refurbishment of its rooms and suites was undertaken by London-based interior designer Kamini Ezralow, whose main objective was to reintroduce the “original intent” and achieve “relaxed luxury and barefoot elegance”. Like Alfonso von Hohenlohe last century, she took inspiration from the glamour of Santa Barbara’s 1950s and 1960s lifestyle, while also incorporating artisanal hand-woven carpets from the south of France and elegant traditionalist Portuguese furniture.
