El Paraiso might not be one of the “heavyweight” residential areas on the Costa del Sol that tend to capture most of the limelight but it does have unique boasting rights to at least one significant milestone. No other area has a golf course designed by one of only five players in history to have won at least one edition of each of the sport’s Grand Slam tournaments (US Masters, US Open, British Open and US PGA Championship).
South African legend Gary Player followed Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan in achieving that honour (subsequently matched by Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods) and, at the height of his fame on the fairways, in between winning a total of nine majors, in 1973 he designed El Paraiso Golf Club in Estepona municipality.
Located in the tranquil folds of El Paraiso valley, with a picturesque backdrop of La Concha mountain peak to the north, the club officially opened in 1974 and that same year hosted the inaugural El Paraiso Open, won by European number one Peter Oosterhuis.
In the four decades since then it has become established as a fine championship course while also being considered one of the friendliest and most welcoming international golf clubs on the Coast, for both members and guests. But most of us are social animals and we like to enjoy experiences away from home. That, of course, requires a car and with the Geneva Motor Show (the second of this year’s five major international automobile exhibitions) about to start (5 to 15 March), we thought we would test-drive two of the magnificent machines being unveiled at the show.
The track-focused but road-legal McLaren 675LT, which takes just 2.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h, is making its world debut in Geneva; while Porsche is also premiering its new Cayman GT4, with a 3.8-litre engine, derived from the 911 Carrera S, that produces 385 hp (283 kW).
