Showpiece Homes and Luxury Living… Benalmádena

When it comes to one particular aspect of Costa del Sol living, Benalmádena can trump all the other main resort towns along the coast. No other municipality includes an administrative centre inland overlooking the sea (Benalmádena Pueblo), an extended stretch of more tourist-orientated coastline (Benalmádena Costa)… plus a sport and leisure marina (Benalmádena Puerto). Benalmádena’s generally steep topography also makes it one of the rare urban residential areas on the Costa del Sol where most of the properties have excellent views. Some of the houses might be older than in other parts of the Coast but, for people who want sea views, Benalmádena arguably has only one major “rival”: Los Monteros on the eastern outskirts of Marbella. Extending from Fuengirola at the western border to Torremolinos in the east and rising from the coast high into the mountains above the main N340 highway, Benalmádena is home to about 50,000 residents, although this number soars in the main tourist seasons. Many of the latter tend to congregate in the Benalmádena Costa part of the municipality, with its eight kilometres of coastline, modern beach amenities and a plethora of restaurants, bars and shops along the seafront. Many tourists, of course, later become residents – or purchase holiday homes – and the property options on the coast are diverse, albeit mainly apartments. At the eastern end of the promenade is Benalmádena Puerto, a picturesque marina with a bustling commercial and sea-faring life (Antonio Banderas used to keep a yacht there with his brother) and linking directly with the popular La Carihuela area – once the Coast’s most famous haven for fish restaurants although these days offering a more eclectic mix of attractions. Moving away from the sea, several attractive urbanisations can be found tucked away in the sweeping hills that rise above the main coastal road, including the verdant Torrequebrada and its renowned golf course of the same name – venue for the 1979 Spanish Open on the European Tour. These hills eventually reach Benalmádena Pueblo – the municipality’s “Old Town” and home to such fascinating attractions as the largest Buddha stupa in Europe. In recent years, development has stretched right up to the outskirts of the town centre, effectively creating a corridor of properties that links up with Arroyo de la Miel, another popular residential area closer to the beach that encapsulates Benalmádena’s appealing blend of traditional village life and beach resort. On the other side of the mountain, the Pueblo merges into one of the Coast’s most exclusive urbanisations, Reserva del Higuerón, where Hilton recently announced it would establish its first DoubleTree resort and spa complex in Europe. In the midst of this strikingly broad landscape is the property featured here, offering panoramic views to the sea and Fuengirola bay. Decorated in oriental style and comprising 1,910 square metres of built area on a 3,430 square metre plot, the eight-bedroom detached villa has an indoor and outdoor pool (the former including a spa area with a counter jet for swimming exercises), a gym, sauna and games room, a Chinese lounge and a garage for up to eight cars. As we are in the final days of Easter, and the Coast is bustling with visitors and residents enjoying a long weekend, some wonderful spring weather and the area’s renowned al fresco dining, for the ultimate in Mediterranean gourmet pleasures we popped along to Marbella for a special presentation of what is described as “the world’s most exclusive olive oil”. Only 75 bottles of this high-end virgin olive oil, produced under the auspices of the newly unveiled Málaga-based Olivia luxury brand, have been produced in meticulously ecological and artisanal conditions. Having had the privilege of enjoying a press tasting of this exquisite golden liquid, we can say its price tag of €175 a bottle is a fair reflection of its quality and lavish packaging.
