Marbella Luxury Weekend… and Hugh Grant

It’s now June and one of the Costa del Sol’s favourite spring-summer pursuits, celebrity watching, is really warming up right on seasonal cue. This week, the Daily Mail led the headlines with the news that Hugh Grant, his Swedish TV producer girlfriend Anna Eberstein and their two young children had been enjoying the Marbella seashore and sunshine. Well, sort of. As the UK newspaper reported in its syrupy celebrity gossip section: “Hugh's feeling the cold? Actor Grant, 55, can't hide his shock at the chilly sea water as he goes for a shirtless dip in Marbella” – in spite of the weather in Spain being “lovely and warm right now”. We were then informed that as Grant “trotted into the sea with gusto, he appeared to stop in his tracks once he was knee-deep, his mouth agape as he pushed himself to go further. Still, once he was deep enough, the actor… found some inner strength and took a dive and splashed his face to acclimatise before going for a swim. Wearing white swimming trunks, Hugh revealed his youthful and naturally slim physique and lightly toned arms.” Phew, it’s a hard life being a celebrity in Marbella. qpvveuwyixxaxgh-1.aspDuring their stay, the family were also spotted enjoying a walk along the Golden Mile beach, and playing tennis. Just days earlier, they had been photographed together watching the action at the French Open in Paris. Even though La Zagaleta keeps details of its residents’ identity ultra-secret, it has been widely reported that Grant has a home in the select resort on the mountain road from Marbella to Ronda. In addition to tennis, he is also an avid golfer, another reason for his frequent visits to the Costa del Sol. Meanwhile, there was some other less glamorous but arguably considerably more important news for Marbella this past week. In March the town hall announced that it would not be providing financial support for this year’s Marbella Luxury Weekend, arguing that the cost of the past five editions had been “unacceptable” due to the absence of sufficient private sponsorship and because its initial objective of showcasing Marbella’s sumptuous delights had been diminished over the past three years – with the event effectively becoming a series of invitation-only parties with free-flowing champagne. Now local entrepreneurs, led by Miguel Gómez from Gómez & Molina jewellers, have stepped up to the plate and organised a “reduced but stronger format” Marbella Luxury Weekend, beginning today (Friday) and continuing tomorrow. The general view – shared by the new government that took over the town hall last year, private businesses and the media – is that “less is best” if Marbella wants to enhance its association with luxury brands. To that end, the main event today is an exclusive presentation of Louis Vuitton’s Fred brand – “once again choosing Marbella as their entry into the national market, before Madrid and Barcelona”. On Saturday, luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos will create a Cuban ambience in Puerto Banús to present its timepieces, with music by jazz pianist Chucho Valdés. Both events are being held on the Benabola promenade. According to the organisers, the aim is for next year’s event to include a more wide-ranging programme, albeit still focused on “the exclusivity that is inherent in the luxury sector”. In this case, a magnificent five-bedroom apartment just metres from the Mediterranean and priced at an excellent €2.1 million.
