Halloween in Spain

Although it wasn't always so, Halloween has become more popular as a celebration in Spain, especially amongst the children. It's mostly down to the influx of foreigners who have bought property on the Costa del Sol and moved here. The inevitable commercialism has come with it, with lots of little ghouls and witches around during the evening!

Day of the Dead

Of course, as a mainly Catholic country, the days around it were always observed, the more sombre Dia de Los Santos (All Saints Day on November 1st) and Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead on November 2nd). These days are when Spanish honour their dead, and crowds will flock to local cemeteries armed with red carnations. It's also a few days where whole families will get together, even if they usually live far apart from each other.

Halloween across Spain

Traditionally a Celtic, pagan festival, Halloween is probably most popular in the Galicia region, where the night of Halloween is known as Noite dos Calacus (Night of the Pumpkins). In Catalunya, there's a special two-day long festival of witches, located in the town of San Feliu Sassera, the Fira de Les Bruixes. It refers back to the burning of witches during the Spanish Inquisition. Madrid, the capital, naturally has many events for Halloween, including a fun pub crawl - or maybe a stagger - and Halloween also falls during the much-visited Semana Gotica de Madrid - or Gothic Week.

Events in Malaga

Do you own a property in Marbella or the general Malaga area, and want to visit then? There's plenty going on, as usual! The hip area around Soho in Malaga is hosting Night in Black, where there will be lots of witches and skeletons prowling the streets. Walk from there straight down to Muelle Uno - the port area, where there's a special night for the kids, with competitions for Best Dressed, and plenty of prizes. All over Malaga and the surrounding area will have themed nights, workshops and opportunities to wear your best wig and cape. Join in the fun!
