Festival of open-top motoring exhilaration

[caption id="attachment_1475" align="alignright" width="300"] Jaguar F-Type Project 7 debut at Goodwood[/caption] Summer effectively begins in southern Spain well before the official change of season on 21 June. So by now those fortunate to have a convertible sitting in their garage will have been able to enjoy having the top down and the wind whistling past their sunglasses for several months. For those of us still stuck with our hard-tops, however, the dream remains unfulfilled, so we thought we would head over to Goodwood for the start of the annual Festival of Speed and check out what luxury supercar models showcased there this year would make the perfect addition to our sublimely pleasant al fresco lifestyles on the Costa del Sol. [caption id="attachment_1483" align="alignright" width="300"] Ferrari California T[/caption] Jaguar F-Type: The latest model in Jaguar’s F-Type sports car range, and the first Jaguar performance vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Operations team, the Project 7 is making its debut at Goodwood. Its distinctive roadster body pays tribute to the three-time Le Mans winning D-type, which in 2014 is celebrating its 60th anniversary – and its name refers to Jaguar’s seven outright Le Mans wins. The fastest and most powerful production car Jaguar has ever built, it will be produced in an exclusive, limited-edition run of up to 250 units. [caption id="attachment_1485" align="alignleft" width="300"] Maserati GranCabrio[/caption] Ferrari California T: Ferrari’s new Grand Tourer is set to make an appearance at Goodwood this year, showcasing its all-new turbocharged V8 engine. Maranello’s engineers have designed a power unit that combines classic Ferrari engine qualities – “ razor-sharp responsiveness, blistering performance, superbly powerful acceleration at all speeds and an exhilarating soundtrack” – with the advantages of turbo technology, such as significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption, a high specific power output and compact dimensions. [caption id="attachment_1491" align="alignleft" width="300"] McLaren MSO 650S[/caption] Maserati GranCabrio: Maserati continues its centennial celebrations in the UK with a stunning display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed of its illustrious 100-year history. The luxury Italian sports car brand has taken over the Stable Yard at the Goodwood estate to present its largest ever display of cars past and present.  Alongside the classic models, Maserati is showcasing its current line-up in full, including the UK debut of the GranCabrio MC Centennial Edition. [caption id="attachment_1497" align="alignright" width="300"] Alfa Romeo 750 Competizione[/caption] McLaren MSO 650S: Making its global debut, in Spider form, at this year’s Goodwood Festival is the bespoke 650S, produced by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) following the positive reaction to the MSO 650S Coupe Concept shown in China earlier this year. Just 50 examples of the MSO 650S will be available globally, available in either a Coupe or Spider bodystyle. At Goodwood it will be seen in action taking part in the famous Hill run. Alfa Romeo: And finally a little nostalgia… Eight Alfa Romeo cars are present at Goodwood: three highest-performance models from the current range and five from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo. These include the 750 Competizione (1955), a two-seater racing car that was designed to compete in the 1.5-litre sports car class. Its 1,488cc engine is derived from the contemporary "Giulietta" and produces an astonishing 145hp which, together with its particularly low weight, would have made the vehicle highly competitive had it ever made it to the racetrack. Unfortunately, the project never reached its full potential and the model on show at Goodwood is one of only two ever built and the only car in full working order. [caption id="attachment_1493" align="alignright" width="300"] Exquisite frontline beach setting[/caption] Now that the motoring options have been previewed, it’s time to look for a suitable home for the sleek new beauty, somewhere on the front of the grid when it comes to great starting points for a leisurely cruise along the Costa del Sol’s highways and byways. Like this outstanding villa in one of Marbella’s most sought after areas: frontline beach and direct access to the sea, contemporary style, all the luxuries you can dream of… and a carport for two cars.
