Celebrity Watch… Seal, Djokovic and Ambrosio

Seal stepped out into the centre of the stage, began strumming his guitar and looked over the heads of the audience at Puente Romano tennis club in Marbella. “There’s a rumour,” said the singer-songwriter, “that Novak Djokovic is in the house. Where are you brother? Oh there he is?” The camera swivelled and focused on the world’s number one tennis player. After revealing that – fascinated and hugely impressed – he had been watching Djokovic practising earlier that day on the Puente Romano courts, Seal dedicated his next song, “Kiss from a Rose”, to the Serbian star and his wife, Jelena, as they beamed happily in the midst of a group of other concert-goers. Just another summer night in Marbella… where global celebrities rub shoulders with everyday holidaymakers. Several other famous faces have been spotted in Marbella so far in July – including Brazilian supermodel and Victoria’s Secret “Angel” Alessandra Ambrosio this past week – and the list is likely to swell as the Starlite Marbella festival continues. Many will be keen to catch the next two headliners this month at the festival: Carlos Santana (24 July) and Charles Aznavour (29 July), who incredibly is still performing at 92! Summer Snippets Now open and already becoming a popular attraction for families visiting the area or living on the Coast and seeking new experiences during the school holidays – is Prison Island. Set up in Benalmádena Port marina, the leisure park comprises (as its name suggests) prison cells with such names as “Devil’s Island”, “The Riot” and “Submarine” and offers various different physical, tactical and team challenges for all members of the family. At the western end of the Coast, meanwhile, the 45th international polo tournament begins at Santa María Polo Club Sotogrande on 27 July, continuing until 28 August and culminating in the Gold Cup – one of only three international competitions outside Argentina with a Grand Slam category in 2016. Good News For those who have purchased a home in the countryside and who have been fretting over its legal status the past few years, this week brought some long-awaited good news – and palpable relief. The regional parliament has agreed to implement modifications to the Andalucian Town Planning Law (Spanish acronym LOUA) that will reportedly regularise as many as 10,000 homes in Málaga province (and 30,000 throughout Andalucía) located on non urban-zoned land (mostly in rural areas), and which have been in a legal limbo for several years and facing the threat of demolition. The new amendments mean owners of these properties can now legalise their status with the civil registry office, and access such basic services as water and electricity supply. Essentially, the new law offers legal security to owners who bought these properties at least six years ago, in “good faith”, ostensibly with town hall approval but subsequently found to be illegal. The amendments will not apply to properties in flood-prone or special protected areas, or those subject to administrative proceedings.
